Opinion: We should reject take-home interview assignment if no feedback is given

Opinion: We should reject take-home interview assignment if no feedback is given 2 by kitari | 3 comments on Hacker News. Just a thought. I have been through FANG-style interviews and also some that screen with a take-home assignment. Generally I found the screening rounds of FANG to be less time intensive than take-home. If you are going to reject me after the take-home. Given my time investment wouldn't it be reasonable to ask for feedback? At the very least I can work on it and improve my skills. We should reject companies with take-home assignments if they do not provide take-home assignments. What do you guys think?

Why does Craigslist censor rental postings containing gender keywords

Why does Craigslist censor rental postings containing gender keywords 2 by hui-zheng | 0 comments on Hacker News. One my friend wanted to post a rental listing last week on craigslist. In it, there is a description like this: "One of the rooms is rented to a 4th-year male student, and we look for a respectful tenant to rent the other room." however, the system doesn't allow the posting to be published, citing the reason that the keyword "male" is used. It's an automatic block. No human review or flagging. It seems craigslist blocks rental posting with gender keyword regardless of the intention of the word's usage. Why does Craigslist does that? Is it to comply with some law? or is it because of some potential legal liability as the host of classified advertisements? Is it a technical reason?

Excluded from cryptocurrency airdrop, a lot of money, what recourse 2 by applesapl | 1 comments on Hacker News. In 2020 Flare announced an airdrop more info: https://ift.tt/2SOtgiO My address was eligible for the airdrop and I had completed all the necessary steps to claim it A second airdrop, songbird, was unveiled., which dropped 2 weeks ago. https://ift.tt/3zfcokK I saw that I did not get any songbird. After contacting support, a week later I eventually learn that my XRP address was added to an exclusion list. This means I get nothing. Ask HN: Video Doorbell Without Subscription? 5 by user568439 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've found the Eufy option with local storage and it looks great, but still I have some privacy concerns. Also some people is complaining about delay with the notifications. If possible I would like it to run with battery but I guess I could install a cable one. Another feature that I find interesting is to be able to switch off the internet access and only allow within the local network when I'm at home. In the future I would like to setup more home automation devices like the thermostat and an alarm system. So I guess I should go for an open source approach. The problem I see too many options out there and the hardware part is even more confusing to me. That's why I was looking in ready to use products. My developer skills are also very limited but I think I could learn this part. But for now I would like to start with a good choice for my first device since my regular doorbell st

Ask HN: Why do companies take 2 months to send job rejection letter? 2 by going_ham | 1 comments on Hacker News. Of all concern, when they know I am going to be rejected, why do they take 2 months to send that generic rejection letter? They aren't even looking at my thing. Can't they just do it immediately? And why should they put "careful consideration" when they know they are going to reject as soon as they see my CV? It would be lot easier if they can reject within 30 minutes. Companies pretending to review documents just wants to make me puke.

Ask HN: Why does it feel like MMO server tech hasn't changed?

Ask HN: Why does it feel like MMO server tech hasn't changed? 2 by Daegalus | 1 comments on Hacker News. So this comes from the recent Release of New World from Amazon. They have a hard cap of 2k players and 2-3x that per server I'm queues. They are adding more servers often but usually not enough. Now, I love the MMO genre and have been through many MMO launches, and this isn't new to me. But as a DevOps engineer, I wonder how we haven't improved server tech to minimize or remove this? I don't know much about MMO servers out outside of the one I'm building for an old MMO, but I feel like a new modern MMO should have some innovations to solve server capacities or so many servers. Why does it feel we have made no progress towards limitless servers, or single world games where you have fleets of servers handling 1 world? Why are we still separating players by servers and not employing phasing to help with clutter of people seen. Or move characters to be disconn

Ask HN: Do you think Scrum is a sham? 7 by wizardofmysore | 5 comments on Hacker News. I have used scrum and I dont see it really helps people build the right product. There is so much jargon and cruft around it; planning poker, story points, scrum master etc.. Software quality of what is built in the scrum way seems poor as it does local optimization and doesnt focus on long term.. seems like some thing that would work for consultancies the best? Simple Kanban seems more effective, do you feel the same way? Am I doing scrum wrong? Is scrum built to ensure that program managers / product managers have something to do?

Not to mention their engine is so premium and incomparable to anything else out there, even Unreal. So how did they turn it around? How did they come back so hard with such fire?

Ask HN: Accessible resources on making a modern static type system? 2 by brundolf | 0 comments on Hacker News. Crafting Interpreters was a great resource for parsing, but working on the static type system for my language project I'm mostly feeling my way around in the dark and making stuff up as I go. That's going better than expected, but I still feel I would benefit from something at around the same level as CI but for type systems (checking and inference; mostly inference, but also things like generic types and refinement). Something practical and light on formal theory, with insight from industry, that lays a foundation from which to keep learning. I tried reading about Hindley-Milner etc directly, and it went way over my head.

I am curious if there is one thing that would make a real difference on a landing page. What is your best tip based on your own experience with landing pages?

Ask HN: Complete Deepfake Nudes – The Future? 9 by blunte | 3 comments on Hacker News. This might be a bit controversial for HN, but it's safe to assume that some HN readers have been on the internet before. For those who are familiar with some of the Reddit groups, you may have noticed a shift from simple sharing of photos to promotional sharing which leads to an OnlyF* type site where there is an economic goal. Nothing wrong with this, and not judging; just an observation. So the question is, if we can generate incredibly detailed and believable faces, why not entire bodies with faces? This must exist already. Who is working on a system to build adult content, made to order, that doesn't involve actual humans? We can already produce very believable landscapes, structures, and moving objects. How long until the carnal content is algorithmically produced?

Ask HN: How did you recover from burnout? 2 by newby | 0 comments on Hacker News. Specifically, how did you delete the connection your brain made between activity and failure? Years ago, I tried to create my own little business. I failed. I tried to be persistent and worked till fatigue, depression, and anxiety attacks stopped me. I got into therapy, slowly rebuilt my life, feel pretty good now. I would even say it was a valuable experience. However, it seems that the connection between writing/coding/building something and failure persists. I think I am not without creativity. I would love to try some side projects. But whenever I get excited about some idea and sit to work on it, my brain treats it like poison. The resistance is so strong I never make any progress. I remember working on something all night and enjoying it so that when I finally went to bed, I was looking forward to continuing in the morning. How do I get this back?

Ask HN: Have you ever spend days unable to do *any* work? 4 by tnuoccanrub | 1 comments on Hacker News. For the past couple of weeks, I've been suffering an absolute inability to be productive at work. I mean spending the whole day staring at the screen not writing a single line of code. At first I thought it was a problem of attention, since I was being distracted by literally anything, from a text to street noise. But even removing all distractions and putting on some noise cancelling headphones won't do the trick. I just feel... unable to start. It's a feeling that's really difficult to explain. Like the feeling that keeps you from jumping into a swimming pool when you're at the edge. I don't find work unpleasant, not the tasks that I have in front of me difficult, and I'm not particularly bored, or tense, or anything. I just can't do it. Is this normal? Any of you have any idea about how to deal with this problem?

Ask HN: How much Slack do you give a recruiter? 4 by throwaway97531 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I’m (almost) at the offer stage with a company that I really like. The engineers that I’ve spoken with are great, the work sounds interesting, and the industry is exciting. My experience with the recruiter (from the company) has been wanting. They had email problems, it takes a long time to get responses, and they told me an offer was coming more than a week ago. I had to reach out to find out what was going on with the offer (it’s still coming) I feel like once I get in the engineering group, things will be fine, but the delays with the recruiter are making me have second thoughts about what otherwise was a very exciting prospect. Is slow communication indicative of bad communication throughout the company, or just a fluke? Should I be worried?

Even though I have spent years practicing "creative" skills - traditional and digital art, writing, gamedev, programming. I've made a lot of things, I'm pretty proud of some of my projects. But "creativity" still feels like a mystery to me. I've had a few good ideas over the years, but they happened by accident, and I can't make them happen deliberately. Sometimes I can go months without an original thought. If I want to intentionally invent a new idea for an app, or a game, or a story, or a business - I feel like I can't, no matter how hard I try. And generally speaking, in life, I feel like I'm pretty bad at having my own unique take/opinion on things, even though I'm trying. Most of my "controv

I've realized that when I have a super productive day the next day or two after that I'm not as energetic and can't do as much. Is this something that other people face? If so is it because you exhaust yourself on your energetic day and need rest? or is it just random and some days you have a great night sleep and are well rested therefore you have a lot of energy? I have nothing against incorporating rest in my schedule to be more productive, but I'm wondering if going all out and then resting and recharging is better or worse than limiting yourself on your energetic day to not exhaust yourself (kinda amortizing your energy). I'm also not sure if the amortization strategy has the same effect. Maybe I need to try it and see.

Ask HN: Would you fund a world-wide-web without tracking? 4 by ThePhysicist | 0 comments on Hacker News. So, I'm working on a new idea to build a "friendly neighborhood" of the world wide web where websites respect the privacy of visitors and do not track them. Technologically I already know how to approach this, but I'm wondering about the funding model. I'm thinking about building a community where people donate money and we distribute that among the website publishers, following a model similar to Humble-Bundle where supporters can decide how much money should go to the publishers and how much should go to us (so that we can fund our work). Would you support something like that? I think even with a small community we could quickly help some folks that run great niche websites to switch to a more privacy-friendly funding model.

Ask HN: Why not just do Web Apps for iOS? 2 by komape | 2 comments on Hacker News. Over the last years more and more people complain that Apple has too much control about which apps are allowed in the App Store. That their reviews are bad. That they take too much from your money. And so on. In the very beginning of the iPhone Steve Jobs preferred Web Apps over installed apps. As we all know they changed their mind in favor of the App Store. But it’s still possible to develop and use Web Apps on iOS. So why there are so few? Apple can’t kick you out and they can’t take your money. Two keypoints of criticism so far. Are there other limitations?

Ask HN: How can I help my son with Epilepsy and Intellectual Disability 7 by kshacker | 3 comments on Hacker News. Saw this post : https://ift.tt/3aAhEX3 and that motivated me to post about our situation. My son is 23 years old. He has completed AA degree in liberal arts at a local community college. He has complex-partial epilepsy and intellectual disability. In my personal opinion, he is borderline for both conditions : his epilepsy is controlled by medications and his intellectual capacity is quite borderline - he will be on top of the list of disabled people, but will find himself struggling to compete with regular people. Social skills are bad with strangers, but otherwise he is quite communicative. His interests are technology - he can not program, I do not think he could write a for loop, but he can narrate the in-depth progression of technology of all iPhones, Androids, Samsungs and what not. Could he describe all features? Maybe not, but he knows quite a bit that he could b

Ask HN: Software design patterns for projects without a scope?

Ask HN: Software design patterns for projects without a scope? 8 by rlayton2 | 1 comments on Hacker News. My work often involves starting with creating small prototypes that show a concept or solve a very specific problem. That prototype solves that problem, the client is happy and wants to extend it. The software grows from there, usually one feature at time. For these projects, the client usually doesn't know what comes next until they need it. This extension can sometimes be immediate, or could be years after the fact. "Common wisdom" states that the prototype should be thrown away when the concept is proved and the funds come in, but for me there is never a point at which that makes sense. As I mentioned, it's one feature at a time. I feel I do a good job at designing those prototypes in a decoupled, extensible way. I think about what direction the project could take, and try to put the right levels of abstraction in. Despite my best efforts, oftentimes I'm

Ask HN: How do you do estimates in 2021? 10 by buttonsmasher | 7 comments on Hacker News. For context, I am a manager at a medium sized enterprise software company, I worked as an engineer for 10+ years and took over managing the team. We have 80+ engineers in the entire org. broken down into smaller teams of 5-10. My team specifically has about 15 engineers broken down into teams of 3-5. We have a very challenging roadmap and often we end up delivering 20-30% of what's planned for the year. One thing that's often asked is how do we estimate, how do we predict when some feature will be done. We are close to 20+ years into the usage of Agile methods, there is the school of thought who prefer to use time based estimates, some try story points and then there is the No Estimates movement. I am trying to see what's considered as a best practice to start something for the team in 2021.

Ask HN: How to organize ideas when switching between brain-intensive projects? 2 by myth2018 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm able to work on multiple sorts of small tasks along a day. I usually organize them into related chunks, so that I can operate on them more efficiently, but I don't have too much trouble on doing the mental "context-switching" involved. However, everything changes when it comes to projects requiring substantial mental effort. It may be hard to begin but, when it gets momentum, it's hard to stop. I can work on a project for days, weeks, even months. But it gets really hard to concentrate on other tasks. And especially hard to work on another project of the same magnitude. I realized that for the first time when I took the huge mistakenly decision of starting a company during my masters. I could do a decent volume of work during those years, but my inability of working on them in parallel brought many sorts of problems to my life. Sometimes

Ask HN: Dynamic Interval Cron 2 by ed1ted | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have a need for calling a function hosted on aws lambda based on dynamic interval. The function usually needs to be called for few hours a day to do some data processing. Because I’m calling external services, sometimes I would call this function on 5 minute interval or could be longer if I run into rate limit issues. So I’m thinking of writing a service which would allow the endpoints to pass back the time (eg 5m or 1h) as a response header to define when to call the function again. I know it’s very specific use case but is this something that can be extended for other uses cases? Trying to figure out if it’s worth building a micro SaaS

Hey HN, I find that I always have a long list of books to read, and to be honest I can only read one book at a time, and it takes me a week or two to read it. For this list I compile self-help, learning, entrepreneurship kind of books, not the fiction entertainment kind of book. Fiction I can consume much quicker. A good self-help book usually means actionable, concrete guidance with just a sprinkle of theory. The reviews from Goodreads or Amazon are inconsistent and often just false, and I've found the only reliable source of good books are my friends (and only a handful of them). What system are you currently using to narrow that book list down and find the truly helpful reads?

A few months ago, I sensed that I am being pushed out. But I pretended that, I am unaware of it, since I wanted to focus my career. Now, this has started to impact my performance rating. I was under the impression, I was being targeted. Recently I realised that, its happening with a lot of other senior people too. Looks like they no longer value the senior people. This has really upset me, since I was very loyal to the team. I am not able to focus on anything. I am thinking about the possible options. One option is to continue, (by doing the minimum required) till they lay me off. But I dont know if they can also resort to the informal layoff, by asking me to look for a job. The advantage in this option is that, this gives me the time to explore building something on my own. But it will definitely hurt my self respect.

I was reading a verge article [1], and this stood out to me. > But in STEM fields, directory structure remains crucially important. Astronomers, for example, may work with hundreds of thousands of files in the same format — which can be unwieldy to scale to a searchable system, Plavchan says. Anecdotally, I've found searchable systems to be lukewarm. Search engines like Google are good for out-of-the-blue questions, but when looking within local files or data inside programs, search systems struggle to get what I need quickly. If I remember a specific file name, Spotlight search on macOS usually tells me what I need, while the default search on Windows does more or less the same. But these search systems never really help me find things in-depth, perhaps some mathematical formula embedded somewhere in a PDF file compiled from LaTeX. Or these search systems are not as forgiving when I'

Basically, she will compare about 10 loans and choose the best one. Software systems can do this easily. 2) The buying agent - so far she has not come up with any houses on her own. She finds the same things we find on line. I dont need her to visit open houses. Legally, in SF I need an agent to be present during the inspections. I can use the selling agent for a fee. If I use her to place an offer, there is a bias problem. A buyer agent may be biased towards placing a "strong" offer. The "stronger" the offer, higher the probability that it will go through and higher her share. I have researched the areas enough and am comfortable coming up with a price. Are there any st

Ask HN: Are there faster but 100% compatible Raspberry Pi alternatives? 3 by qwerty456127 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I love my Raspberry Pi 4 with its brand OS and the Noobs multi-boot set-up (switching between the full desktop, LibreELEC and Lakka) but it feels painfully slow on many websites, namely YouTube. I'd like a faster CPU still running the exactly same OS (not just Debian or anything else). Is this possible? Are there any fully compatible alternatives?

Ask HN: Under pressure from industry, how can academics protect themselves? 2 by rscho | 4 comments on Hacker News. Our group (western Europe) has submitted a review on a device that generates a lot of money (i.e. US multibillion $ industry). Our results speak mildly against the use of said device, with low confidence in the evidence presented. Since the inception of the study, our corresponding author has been queried multiple times by a VP of the relevant company through email, asking us to share our data (which we refused). Since submission, the VP is asking for a meeting in person and there are rumors of them not being happy about our results (which remain unpublished). We did not respond. In the meantime, the company also reached to our head of dept to express their worries about our work. We are worried about potential retaliation on publication. Our boss (head of dpt, tenured prof, not an author) told us not to worry and discouraged us from seeking legal advice. Neither the s

Ask HN: When would you go with Kinesis over SNS/SQS and why?

Ask HN: When would you go with Kinesis over SNS/SQS and why? 2 by 1penny42cents | 0 comments on Hacker News. In a previous project we went with SNS/SQS for our event bus, because of simplicity. I wondered towards the end if Kinesis would have been better. The main reason in my mind being one less API/component, ordered streams, and replayability. SNS/SQS made it a bit painful to replay events. The counterpoint seems that Kinesis has some complexity around scalability that you might not need to worry about, depending on the usage. But I've never used Kafka/Kinesis so I can't say. What are your thoughts?

Tell HN: Thanks Apple for placing Safari address bar at the bottom of the screen 4 by reimertz | 2 comments on Hacker News. I truly appreciate the UX of having the address bar closer to my fingers. I’m not going to lie, it’s going to take some time to get used to. But super excited about the impact this will have and how websites will start being more mindful of hamburger menus, CTAs etc. being reachable when holding the phone with one hand.

Ask HN: Has anyone had any luck dealing with Airbnb when things go wrong?

Ask HN: Has anyone had any luck dealing with Airbnb when things go wrong? 7 by 0bfus | 1 comments on Hacker News. Context: I was in Paris staying in a month plus long Airbnb when our airbnb house key was stolen from us. We ended up staying in hotels for two days without our essentials (medicines, clothes, passports, etc), during which our host basically offered no alternatives -- he told us plainly he was on vacation and wouldn't return to help us for two weeks (had an extra key in Paris). After spending two days trying to figure out solutions which were repeatedly shot down by the host, we ended up deciding we had to get a locksmith to cut the lock so we could get in, we couldn't spend any more time without our essentials. Cutting the lock ended up being about $250 and re-keying the locks ended up being another $750. The airbnb was still unusable (we needed a security fob to get into the building each time, regardless of the unit keys), so we ended up booking another Airbnb

Google experiencing billing notification issue

Google experiencing billing notification issue 4 by awslattery | 0 comments on Hacker News. Getting dozens of emails and push notifications from Google Ads, Cloud, etc. that there is an issue with the payment method stored. After programming the backend for my current project in a non-typed language I never want to go that route again. I think actually that the frontend project with all of its thousand of files and components is easier to handle just because typescript helps me so much.

Ask HN: How do you make money on the side in tech?

Ask HN: How do you make money on the side in tech? 7 by paxys | 5 comments on Hacker News. Technical skills are no doubt in very high demand right now. If an experienced engineer can make over $500K/yr plus benefits working 40 hours a week at a large company, there should be an opportunity to spend a few extra hours on a side gig to increase that number by a few percent. From what I can see, however, there is no straightforward process for this. Online freelancing platforms are a crapshoot. It is impossible to monetize a random open-source library or other similar project. Starting your own consultancy takes a lot of initial effort and capital. Entrepreneurship is even riskier and more time consuming. For someone in my position who is not looking to quit my job, start a billion dollar company or change the world, just convert some of my spare time into spending money, what is the best solution at present? Has anyone else run into this problem and found something that works?

How Do You Sell Your Code/Architecture to Internal Dev Groups

How Do You Sell Your Code/Architecture to Internal Dev Groups 4 by 100011_100001 | 2 comments on Hacker News. This question is geared towards Architects, Tech Leads. DevOps Leads etc. How do you communicate new recommendations or framework changes effectively to developer groups that need to adopt it? I was having a discussion with upper management recently and I came to the realization that the group I am in, doesn't perform HumanOps very well. We don't sell our code to our customers, the development teams within our company, we want to deal with new tech, bleeding edge changes not with the nitty gritty of framework adoption. We don't just jump on bandwagons, but we do leverage technology that becomes available. We try to be within 1 stable release of current versions. The problem is not all developers are like that. A lot of times we create a mostly turn key solution to solve problems, but the developer groups are slow to adopt. We luck the sales pitch, or marketing sl

Ask HN: How do you coordinate schedules and projects with your spouse?

Ask HN: How do you coordinate schedules and projects with your spouse? 2 by subpixel | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm not doing a good job of coordinating schedules and projects with my better half and I'm interested in knowing what tools and processes help others stay in-sync with their partners. My wife and I may adjust our agreed-upon school drop-off and pickup schedule several times a week, and neither of us knows who is going to find a contractor to renovate the garage. But then I get frustrated when she brings up these topics when I'm heads-down on work. We're falling apart here! A specific thing I've failed to figure out is how to control notifications regarding calendar invites - emails just find ways to be missed. I know I can pipe emails into something like Slack, but I'm wary of trying to sell my wife on a jury-rigged system. Please, tell me what works for you.

My Experience with MicroAcquire

My Experience with MicroAcquire 2 by cpncrunch | 0 comments on Hacker News. I decided to list my business for sale on MicroAcquire. After inputting some of our info, but before I wanted the listing to go live, they emailed me and said they had made my listing live. I thought there was a button to submit the listing before it went live, but they told me it just automatically goes live as soon as you enter all the required info. So I asked them to make the listing non-public, which they did. But then the next morning I got another email saying our listing was live (I hadn't done anything). Not only that, but they had added a whole bunch of private info, such as our customers, to the public page! So now I've just edited out the confidential information and asked them to remove our listing. I just can't trust them, so I won't be using their service. It's a shame, as it looked like a useful service. I'm not concerned that they might sell my data.

Ask HN: Web devs who've made a transition to part time work, how did you do it?

Ask HN: Web devs who've made a transition to part time work, how did you do it? 3 by every_other | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm a fairly senior agency grunt who has been building web sites and applications for around a decade. I enjoy it but would just like more free time for projects, hikes, etc. If I could earn 3/5ths of my salary for working 3/5ths my current time, I'd take it. Really, I'd be open 2/5th - 4/5th or working full time with some extended time off between projects. I'm not a great networker so not sure freelance would be the easiest option for me but I'd be open. I'm just looking for ideas and to hear from others about their experiences.

Ask HN: Do you believe the SF Housing Market will recover post-pandemic?

Ask HN: Do you believe the SF Housing Market will recover post-pandemic? 3 by cgb223 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Many people left the City to live in places with more space given the remote first world that COVID created. But at some point, COVID will end, or at the very least, the restrictions around it will, and SF Companies will be planning their next moves. SF was the epicenter of Tech, and the pandemic encouraged high skill tech workers to move to other cities, which helps bolster their own tech scene. But! Maybe tech companies call back their formerly remote workers. Maybe they spent too much on their campuses, maybe the future isnt full remote but rather hybrid in office some days and remote others. What is your thesis about the SF Housing Market? Will it recover? Or are the high prices we're so used to a thing of the past? Or! permanent stagnation?

New rich text editors use native contenteditable without abstractions over DOM

New rich text editors use native contenteditable without abstractions over DOM 4 by m_baranowski | 1 comments on Hacker News. DraftJS, Slate, ProseMirror, Quill and more - they all use their model for abstracting DOM (unfortunately I don't rememeber what was the exact reasoning; Quill has some article on that https://ift.tt/2XEiL3H) I can see now the surge of new RTEs that simply use contenteditable and dom. Is it that isssue from the past that led those libs above to use abstractions - are not valid anymore?
