Embracer Reportedly Set To Sell Star Wars: KOTOR Remake Dev Saber Interactive In $500 Million Deal

Image
Embracer Group, the company behind the closure of Saints Row studio Volition Games and layoffs at companies like  Eidos-Montréal  and Black Forest Games , is set to sell Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake developer Saber Interactive, according to a new  Bloomberg  report . Embracer is selling the developer to a group of private investors in a deal worth $500 million, a source told the publication.  Once the deal goes through, Saber Interactive will be a privately owned company and free from Embracer, which is behind layoffs spread throughout the past couple of years. Following the transaction, the studio will continue work on its Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which it took over as the developer after Aspyr Media was removed from it in 2022 .  Bloomberg  reports this sale is another effort of Embracer to cut costs alongside studio closures and layoffs after a planned $2 billion deal with Saudi Arabia-backed Savvy Games Group fell through in 2023. For today only, Best Buy is offering the official Xbox Series X|S Core wireless controller in Stellar Shift for only $49.99. That's almost 30% off the original $69.99 MSRP. Aside from the difference in color scheme, this is the same controller as the one that's included with your Xbox Series X or S console. Kingdom Hearts 4 Rears Its Head to Celebrate Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Release

We may have just gotten our latest look at Kingdom Hearts 4 ( kind of) in the form of a social media post celebrating the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Earlier today, the official Kingdom Hearts X/Twitter account shared an image of Sora on what looks like the streets of Shibuya, glancing up at various big-screen advertisements featuring Sephiroth. The reason we're counting this as a look at Kingdom Hearts 4, however, is that it's set in Quadratum, the bustling city in which the sequel will take place. #FF7リバース発売 #FF7R #_KH pic.twitter.com/obneXBQTnT — キングダム ハーツ (@_KINGDOMHEARTS) February 29, 2024 We can tell because the intersection in which Sora is standing, with the big 104 building in the background, is one of the few true glimpses we've seen of Quadratum. The setting is based on Tokyo, specifically the Shibuya district. In a cute touch, the image references a real-life ad campaign that's currently taking place in Shibuya, with Final Fantasy VII Reb

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on Nintendo Switch Doesn’t Work Today, Feb. 29, Seemingly Because It’s a Leap Year

While Square Enix is busy launching Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth today, February 29, another Final Fantasy game has stopped working entirely — seemingly because it’s a leap year. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a rhythm Final Fantasy spin-off that released on Nintendo 3DS and iOS back in 2012. A sequel, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line , launched on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 last year, and it’s the Switch version in particular that’s currently unplayable, with players greeted by a black screen that won’t go away. I restarted the game 6 times but it keeps happening #TFBL #THEATRHYTHM #NintendoSwitch pic.twitter.com/GRNyqU5pP0 — Puri 🐻‍❄️ (@puritikuma) February 29, 2024 “I wanted to boot Theatrhythm to do my dailies,” X/Twitter user @Regulus_Tera reported , “and the game is not booting up, because it appears the game connects to a Square Enix server for whatever reason even though I have the physical copy. And people ask why I play old games.” IGN has verified this black screen is

EA to Lay Off Around 670 Workers, Sunsetting Games, 'Moving Away From Future Licensed IP'

Electronic Arts has announced that it, too, is undergoing mass layoffs, with plans to let go 5% of its total global staff, or roughly 670 individuals. In a note today sent to staff, CEO Andrew Wilson said that EA is reacting to "accelerating industry transformation where player needs and motivations and changed significantly." Crucially, EA also said that it is "moving away from the development of future licensed IP." EA currently has several confirmed Star Wars and Marvel games in development, including a third Jedi game, Black Panther, and Iron Man. According to Wilson, EA will double down on owned IP, sports, and "massive online communities." While Wilson did not provide details on which games would be sunset, EA already announced it would be shuttering two mobile games: F1 Mobile Racing and MLB Tap Sports . "This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our

Here's How New Game Plus Works In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Image
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a great game – you can read  Game Informer's  review here to find out why we liked it so much. However, it's massive. Taking place over multiple continents on the Planet (or Gaia as it was retroacively called) with various party members, a bunch of open-world areas, and lots of side activities and minigames to partake in, you're going to be playing this game for at least 50 to 60 hours before you roll credits (I reached the ending at 80 hours).  When you've seen the story through, you might not be ready to hang up the ole' Buster Sword. Fortunately, Rebirth has New Game Plus. Well, kinda – it's complicated.  Here's How New Game Plus Works In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth After you beat the game, you'll be prompted to make a save file (heads up, you can only make 10). This will be your completed run save file and it will be marked forever with a teal tag that says Chapter Selection when viewing the file. We won't show it

Nintendo Says Tears of the Kingdom Was Pirated 1 Million Times Pre-Release in Lawsuit Against Emulator Creator

Nintendo is suing Tropic Haze, the creators of the popular Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu , alleging its tech was used to let over one million copies of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom download illegally a week and a half before its official release. The suit, which was filed on February 26 in the United States District Court of Rhode Island, alleges that Tropic Haze is liable for unlawful distribution of pirated copies of Tears of the Kingdom before it released on the Switch on May 12 , 2023. "Today, Yuzu provides any Internet user in the world with the means to unlawfully decrypt and play virtually any Nintendo Switch game — including Nintendo’s current generation and most popular games — without ever paying a dime for a Nintendo console or for that game. And to be clear, there is no lawful way to use Yuzu to play Nintendo Switch games, including because it must decrypt the games’ encryption," the suit reads. Nintendo is pursuing legal action against Tropic H

Vanillaware makes excellent games, from GrimGrimoire to Odin Sphere to Dragon’s Crown . However, it wasn’t until its 2019 release, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim , that the developer’s name became synonymous with “you should play this team’s games.” It’s hard to tell what, exactly, made 13 Sentinels the breakout title for Vanillaware, shipping more than 1 million copies worldwide as of August last year, making it the studio’s best-selling title. The easy answer is probably its beloved story, both in how it plays out and how it’s infused into the game’s real-time strategy mech combat. Publisher Atlus and Vanillaware released it in 2019, so when the team announced its latest title, Unicorn Overlord, last September , it was easy to conclude that this was the studio’s next big focus. And it is, but curiously, I learned in an exclusive preview of the game Vanillaware conceived it during the development of 13 Sentinels, with its creation handled in parallel with that game, albeit with a differe

Helldivers 2 Servers Handled All Players Over the Weekend ‘Without Problem’, Dev Now Returns to ‘Original Plan’

The developer of Helldivers 2 has declared the weekend just gone a success, insisting the game’s servers handled all players “without problem”. In a tweet , Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said he was proud of the development team after a weekend that appeared to go much better than the prior weekend for players trying to login. This despite Helldivers 2 breaking its Steam concurrent player count record once again, hitting 458,709. Helldivers 2 has suffered significant server problems since its explosive launch across PlayStation 5 and PC, so much so that Pilestedt had issued a warning about server queues for the weekend just gone. But the developer appears to be getting on top of the issues after releasing a number of patches and, most recently, raising the max player cap to a whopping 700,000 concurrent users. Earlier in the weekend, Pilestedt tweeted to say Arrowhead expected the Helldivers 2 servers to hit a new 800,000 concurrent user max capacity cap, warning of “light queue
