Players are finding guns they can't shoot in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

As was the case with the Borderlands games, spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands drops randomized weaponry in an endless gush, like a fountain but with sniper rifles instead of water. Those guns can only be used if you're the right level for them, and it's common for a quest to hand out something you won't be able to wield until the next level-up. What's not common is for that level to be higher than what's currently achievable in the game. As afrankiewicz12 on the Wonderlands subreddit spotted and commenters confirmed, you can receive weapons as high as level 43 (in this case a legendary submachine gun that shoots fire bullets and does more damage after you cast a spell). It's not possible to actually get to level 43, however. The level cap in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is 40, and you'll probably finish the main storyline around level 30 or so. Hang on to any level 41+ weapons you find, though. With previous Borderlands games the level cap has gone up

Hyper Light Drifter sequel is a gorgeous 3D roguelite with co-op

Just months after releasing Solar Ash, Heart Machine has revealed a sequel to the beloved pixel art action RPG Hyper Light Drifter . A departure from its predecessor, Hyper Light Breaker is a 3D third-person action game in a roguelite format, retaining the speed and colour of its forebear but replacing pixels with polygons. Hyper Light Breaker is set in the Overgrowth, which is a "vast, ever-changing world with massive, open biomes and deep labyrinths." This being a roguelite, that means the environments will be randomized, but there's a hub-like 'Settlement' which becomes more populated throughout the game (think Hades, or Spelunky 2, or… most roguelites).  The fighting sounds like it's aiming for something as fast and fluid as Solar Ash, albeit with a focus on RPG-style build crafting: there's a "wide arsenal" of weapons and items to discover. The player-character has a hoverboard and glider at their disposal, and can wall-dash as well, all

Why Roberta Williams Is Re-embarking on a Colossal Cave Adventure in 2022

Even after she retired from making adventure games, Sierra On-Line co-founder Roberta Williams never stopped having adventures. After a legendary career as a pioneer of the adventure genre, creating games like King's Quest, Mystery House, Phantasmagoria, and many more, Williams has spent her retirement sailing all over the world with her husband and Sierra co-founder Ken Williams. And she's still creating, too, having just published her first novel last year - a historical fiction entitled Farewell to Tara. "I do adventure games and I live my life as an adventure," she tells me in an interview at GDC last week. "I love adventure! I'll go and get it wherever I can get it." But when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lockdowns that halted many of her usual adventures, Williams needed a new project. At the time, Ken was learning Unity with the intent of making a new game of his own when Williams suddenly remembered a game that had been very, very speci

Twitch halts paid channel boosts after people pay to get porn on the front page

Image
In October 2021, Twitch began testing a new feature that enabled viewers to pay money to boost a streamer's channel to the site's front page in order to give it greater exposure. That experiment has now come to an end, at least for the time being, as troublemakers were taking advantage of the system to push porn to the top of the heap. Boosting originally debuted in December 2020 using free channel points, pooled by viewers during Community Challenges. "When a boost challenge is successfully completed, we'll promote your stream into highly visible parts of Twitch like 'Live channels we think you'll like'," the Boost This Stream FAQ explains. "Promoting your stream helps improve your visibility and reach new audiences." Paid boosts, first announced in September 2021, work in the same way, except that real money is involved. Unlike channel points, which are earned by following and watching channels, the only limiting factor with paid boosts

This 5TB external HDD for $100 will store more games than you'll ever play

Image
Anyone looking for a reasonable cheap storage solution might want to check out Amazon's one-day deal on a WD Black 5TB P10 Game Drive for only $100 . While not as fast as its SSD counterparts, 5TB is a LOT of space for games, movies, and whatever startling family secrets you don't trust to upload to the cloud.  The WD Black P10 Game Drive is a 5TB external hard drive compatible with current and older Xbox and Playstations consoles. It connects via USB 3.0 and offers speeds up to 140MB/s. It is also small enough to fit your back pocket built to take a decent drop or two.  I know what you're going to say, "A hard drive, in 2022, really?" Hear me out! I know that SSDs are pretty much in a league of their own when it comes to speed and performance vs an HDD. But if you're only concerned about archival purposes, higher capacity external SSDs (basically anything over 2TB) are wildly expensive for the task.  Don't believe me? The 4TB SSD version of the WD Bla

Best AMD motherboards in 2022

Image
The best AMD motherboard is the perfect pairing for an enthusiast AMD gaming build. There are a ton of options out there, but few of them have the right features for the right price. We tested a load of different generations of AMD chipsets on these motherboards to find which one comes out on top. But remember, before you shell out on any of these AMD motherboards, you first need to decide which is the correct chipset for you. AMD has stuck with the stalwart AM4 socket through a bunch of CPU generations, so there are a lot of choices. The X570, X470, and B450 motherboards are all viable options for now, and will be for some time. When searching for the right AMD motherboard, remember that more expensive doesn't always mean better. Think carefully about what features you really need, and which you could do without, against your budget. Do you need a lot of ports? Wi-Fi 6 support? Are you sticking with SATA-based SSD drives, or moving on to an NVMe SSD? Whatever you need your mach

Best 4K gaming monitors in 2022

Image
The best 4K gaming monitor gives you a pristine image so that your games look incredible. You'll need a modern graphics card to power a good monitor, which is, admittedly, tough to get right now. But if you plan on getting one or have one, a 4K gaming monitor will give you a beautiful image and a high refresh rate to keep everything smooth. It's the ultimate PC gamer dream. While you'll want a top-end GPU to get the most from a 4K monitor, even the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT can be surprisingly capable when it comes to 4K. Especially if you don't feel the need to run at max settings. This means that when GPU supply returns to something like normality, back in, say, late 2022, we might actually have some next-gen cards on the way. And those should pretty much all be 4K-capable. In most cases, you're going to want a VA or IPS panel, with a refresh rate above 60Hz, and some form of frame-syncing capability—either G-Sync or FreeSync. You
