Ask HN: Full text search engine in JavaScript for English and Chinese? 3 by graderjs | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm interested in providing the full text search capability for product 22120 which has a web archive capability. I've investigated a few such as those based on solr but my concern is that they do not handle multiple human languages with minimal configuration. Ideally something that has the stemming and tokenization for multiple languages including East Asian languages such as Chinese Japanese Korean and ideally South Asian languages like Hindi and Urdu as well. Unfortunately a great many search engines out there seem to have a stemming and tokenization available for romance languages such as Latin derived or Germanic languages. People from everywhere like to archive web content that they browse and the content is in multiple human languages so to provide a good full text search I need something that can handle multiple human languages. I considered maybe writing

Blockchain vs. Becoming a Better Person

Blockchain vs. Becoming a Better Person 2 by ruckadub | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've been coding and designing since 1997 and I've followed every internet iteration for 3 decades. I'm the founder of a company that is in position to change a culture based industry, and throughout my decade plus of building this platform, I have determined that building opinionated software with "old tech" operated by highly ethically individuals or gatekeepers, is the middle ground to an equitable future for the Internet. We're all exhausted with big tech's monopolized hold of the Internet, similar to how we're also tired of corporations on wall street, or over hearing about people killed by guns. As much as decentralizing big tech and replacing corporation with DeFi and confiscating all guns might seem like a great idea to some, the solution to all of this is simply becoming a better person. The blockchain not only suffers from insurmountable scaling issues, but

We are considering creating few internal tools to speed up the work of a few departments in our organization, but before starting development heads on, I would love to gather some wisdom from HN. First, what tools are you developing? How do you handle user authentication? Do you develop one single big application for everything in your organization, or few distinct applications, each with its own specific goal? Any specific thing to watch out for? Thanks!

Ask HN: How do you tackle your own negativity? 4 by c7DJTLrn | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've noticed that the majority of my own comments here on HN have a negative spin on them and a lot of my blog posts unfortunately are very ranty. I guess to others this can make me look obnoxious. At the same time, I struggle to suppress my own negativity and feel like I need to get it out. Does anybody else feel this way? How do (or don't) you tackle it?

Ask HN: How to Grow My Money? 4 by rschachte | 4 comments on Hacker News. I’m 26 years old and I write software for big corp. I currently have a net worth of $550k all cash. 500k is invested in a mix of 401k and various low expense ratio index funds (large, mid, small and international). 50k I have in cash and plan on investing. Ask HN: How is Netflix able to prevent screenshots on Chrome? 5 by the42thdoctor | 1 comments on Hacker News. The other day I tried to screenshot a funny frame in a Netflix video to show to a friend and the image came out black. I tried both the `prtsc key` and the `Snipping Tool`. This got me wondering is JavaScript able to interfere with the built-in OS printscreen function ? I was using Chrome on a Windows 10 machine, and in the end, strangely enough, I was able to take the screenshot on the Netflix Android app.

Ask HN: What new technology is about to become big? 6 by FridayoLeary | 6 comments on Hacker News. I wonder, what will replace traditional devices. If sci fi movies are right, the future will be holographic displays. Meta seems to think it's the metaverse, which sounds to me like it could be VR (They couldn't possibly be so pathetic as to imagine a simple super app could pass as a "metaverse"). The 1970's vision of a space age and major advancements in biology and nuclear tech, while computer tech seems to stagnate doesn't seem to be happening. So what particular area(s) do you think will see major breakthroughs over the next few decades?

After all, they can't satisfy everyone with one model and system builders would be happy to have an M1 to play with. Only makes sense to me.

Ask HN: How to start learning about investments

Ask HN: How to start learning about investments 2 by DeathArrow | 0 comments on Hacker News. I know basically zero about investing and stocks, mutual funds, XFDs, ETFs and FOREX seems most accessible investment vehicles. I want to start investing some money and before doing it I want to learn how to do it. I don't plan to get super rich by doing this but to improve my financial situation. What I want is to learn how not to lose money and being able to correctly asses the risks and rewards. There are sites like investopedia but they seem generic and articles aren't well connected with each other. I don't expect to have a learning path or certificates or nanodegrees or even complete tutorials like on Udemy, Coursera or Udacity. But I want a way to have some structured information. So where do you suggest I can start? How to find good materials that I can learn from? How to structure the information and do a learning plan?

Ask HN: Advice for generating and reading from a picture (similar to a qr code) 2 by 07121941 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm trying to design something similar to a qr code from scratch. I've got some ideas on how I can anchor and fill in binary data into the graphic design but I'm a bit unsure as to how I should approach the reading/decoding part (with a camera). Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this. QR codes have been around for a while. I like the way facebook messanger or snapcodes approach the task of human-friendly and machine readable designs, but I'd like to experiment with something new. It doesn't need to encode too much information anyway. I've been reading into AR with unity. I don't mind learning some c# but I'd ideally want to write a solution in python or javascript. Thanks again

Ask HN: Where are secular source of crypto space knowledge? 3 by Existenceblinks | 3 comments on Hacker News. As history record shows that a bunch of religions have been survived for thousand years, a lot of church and temple, along with modern technology and government of secular and non-secular states. So, I am adjusting my attitude to live with cryptocurrency stuff because I think it is not going anywhere and could still exist for my lifespan. Cryptocurrency/blockchain knowledge like religions, there are good concept applicable and useful in life, there are also tons of bullshit, scam, even violence. I would like to collect sources of knowledge that is not related to any cult non-sense. Knowledge in crypto/blockchain stuff I would like to know, for example, what's top 5 coins, overall promising regarding transaction rate, fee, market cap, suitable for application (e.g. dapp), technical and philosophical limitation. I have pretty good exploring skills, read a lot of data, but

Ask HN: The Expected Style for Tech Résumés

Ask HN: The Expected Style for Tech Résumés 4 by xook | 1 comments on Hacker News. The recent Reddit thread posted here about buzzword-filled resumes getting more results got me wondering: What does HN consider a decent résumé when it comes to font choice and graphics? There are many different styles, and presumably, some are better than others for different career paths. However, I wonder what the technology- and engineering-focused groups think is a "stand-out" résumé. For example: While at college, we were informed that a resume should be–aside from consistent–bare bones without any unexpected fonts (only Times New Roman or a basic Sans), styles, or coloration. It should be black text on a white background, no pictures, no styling outside of headings, and so forth. On one hand, it wouldn't be distracting, but would it not be wise to stand out in some way than to "blend in," as it were?

Ask HN: Another job board? Need feedback on the idea

Ask HN: Another job board? Need feedback on the idea 3 by techsin101 | 4 comments on Hacker News. So It's not ready yet, but I'm creating a new job board for developers. I'm looking to get feedback on idea itself.... So my hypothesis is that as a dev, I'd love to do some gigs on the side. But I'm not really in the mood to search for them, apply to 1000s of them and do all back and forth. I literally want small jobs, that I can knock out in a day or two, and get paid $100-$1k. Another extension to this idea I've thought about is, to have an expert dev on call. Got stuck in your day to day work? Call in expert. The expert does screen share, fixes the problem hopefully. But it could be like a service that companies could subscribe for monthly N hours. (SQL expert, Wordpress, React, etc) Which one do you think has more potential?

Ask HN: HTTP request headers to facilitate better UX on web sites?

Ask HN: HTTP request headers to facilitate better UX on web sites? 2 by mactavish88 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Are there any, or can we maybe come up with (i.e. suggestions please if it seems like a good idea), HTTP headers that browsers can send to sites that automatically instruct them in terms of: 1. The kinds of cookies I'm willing to accept (e.g. strictly necessary). For example, `X-Prefer-Cookies: strictly-necessary` or `X-Prefer-Cookies: all`. 2. The fact that I don't, and probably never will, care about your newsletter. (If your content really interests me, I'll find a way through your UI to subscribe.) For example: `X-Offer-Newsletter: no`, or `X-Offer-Newsletter: yes`. If you wanted to facilitate more general UX preference indications from the client side, you could potentially come up with a scheme like `X-UX-Preferences: strictly-necessary-cookies; no-newsletters`. This way I can set these preferences once in my browser and be done with your annoying cookie

How is it then, that many developers write and contribute to such paywall websites? And it's not just Medium. Many websites are built on top of Medium and they too get paywalled.

Ask HN: Why is Google paying Apple to be default search engine on iPhones?

Ask HN: Why is Google paying Apple to be default search engine on iPhones? 3 by mrkramer | 5 comments on Hacker News. I don't understand why Google pays Apple to be default search engine on Iphone when Google's market share and brand is so big that no way any other search engine hurts it anytime soon? Allegedly Google pays between $8 billion and $12 billion each year to be default search engine on Iphones and Ipads[1]. They could stop paying Apple and save $12 billion every year. My only reasoning is if Google doesn't pay some other search engine will for example Bing but then again Google is the most searched word on Bing[2]. So Google is entrapped in a situation where they are afraid not to be default search engine on Apple devices because Microsoft could jump in or even Apple itself with its future search engine. I don't see how this decision is reasonable because let's say Google pays $100bn in 10 years that's a lot of money that could've been investe

Ask HN: If I disable JavaScript, am I worth less to advertisers? 4 by chrischapman | 1 comments on Hacker News. The question was prompted by this HN post today (Browser Fingerprinting Without JavaScript)[1]. The article suggests I could still be tracked so I started wondering about the effects of JavaScript (JS) on advertisers. Hypothesis: Tracking primarily benefits advertisers. Adverts are primarily delivered in the browser by JS. By disabling JS, my value to advertisers is diminished. As data collectors can't sell my data at a profit, they should stop collecting my data. Is that hypothesis valid? My own motivation for disabling JavaScript was simply to avoid experimental DHTML stuff (like wierd mouse effects) back in the day - not privacy or tracking - but I'm still really happy with that choice - I get to browse a quieter web. But has it made me less worth while to track? If it was just me as a NoJS user, advertisers wouldn't bother about it. But imagine if Halloween

Ask HN: Is there a simple and minimal language like C but without its footguns? 4 by apoorvagk | 6 comments on Hacker News. I want to pick a new programming language that is simple and minimal like C but does not have the type of footguns C has (segmentation faults, double-free issues, etc.) C++, Java, Rust are far from minimal. Go feels minimal but it too has a lot of features compared to C and it has a garbage collector too. Here are some things I am looking for: * Compiles down to machine code. * Does not have the footguns of C. * Simple like C. * Implementations available for all major OSes, at least, Linux, Mac, Windows, *BSDs. After extensive search I got the feeling that it is difficult to find such a language. If I am willing to let go "simple like C", then it provides a lot of options like Rust, Nim, and all. Just asking here to see if I missed something during my search.

How can an English teacher transition into web-development? 3 by aaron5 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hello, I'm Aaron. I hold a BS in ChemE, but my day-job is teaching English in China - I think I do a good job. Also I write fiction at my website. For several years, I've made little projects on the web, mostly in PHP and JavaScript, for example: a game where people "invest" in subreddits like stocks [1], a reddit-like-commenting system [2], my own website [3], etc. How could I transition to a remote web-developer job most effectively? Coding boot-camp? Crank through job-boards and applications? Go through an online MS in CS? My coding is not strong, but I can get stuff to work in PHP and JavaScript, and I can use web APIs fairly well. I'm lacking in skill and knowledge, but I hope to remedy that. So, if you have a suggestion for how I might most effectively improve and hopefully even be remunerated, I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts. Thank you. [1] paar

My apologies for this not being directly tech related, but I know there are many people here on HN with domain expertise in a broad array of industries. A family member is experiencing new symptoms that were the precursor to discovering their cancer originally. Unfortunately at diagnosis, they were already stage 4. The oncologist ordered a specific scan, the insurance company denied it, and then required a "peer to peer" meeting with the doctor. They forced the doctor's hand to accept a different type of scan, which at an earlier point of treatment had returned a false negative for us. And the process is also causing, and has caused in the past, delays to treatment in an extremely time sensitive situation. What can I possibly do about this peer to peer theater? There is absolutely no way the insurance companies' "peer" knows the lates

I wanted to hear What is the current thinking on Getting reviews for your app' for an up-and-coming developer like myself? There is a relevant Quora thread https://ift.tt/2CJ8bf6 which features two dueling camps: one side extols the virtues of select Pay-for-Reviews sites, while the other takes the opposing view of Don't do that! - A sure way to get banned and/or banished; –and Yes, the Refill feature offered by some of those mentioned makes you wonder: What's the reason this is being offered, as in a "good reason" -?

Ask HN: HTTPS and SSL Proxy security question

Ask HN: HTTPS and SSL Proxy security question 3 by fakeElonMusk | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm not a security expert but I always thought that HTTPS was secure and that if my code was calling an API (for example) with HTTPS/SSL Cert that it was encrypted end to end. Rephrase, I know it's encrypted but I'm aware that MIM or SSL Proxy methods can be used to expose that traffic by spoofing client/server keys. So I assume that someone has to be on your network to use a tool like Charles Proxy. Is the combination of securing your network plus HTTPS "enough" security to keep web and app traffic safe? What are other aspects I'm missing? Would love to learn more if anyone is willing to share some good resources. TIA.

Is Doing a PhD Beneficial?

Is Doing a PhD Beneficial? 4 by yarandomguy | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm a final year computer science student, currently wondering if I should do a PhD. Professors told me that it is useful to the career, suits my interest, and it is better done earlier than later. I'm interested in theories and I often read books and articles about them. However, I'm not sure if I am capable of producing quality research as I have no experience doing that. Also, from others comment on HN, it seems that research today is publish a lot -> optimize for H index -> get tenure and write grant proposals, which may not be something I would enjoy/capable of doing... I consider doing a grad study purely for the pursuit of knowledge, so I wonder if it would be better to just get a developer job instead of doing a grad study...

Ask HN: What language to learn after Python? 3 by 8589934591 | 7 comments on Hacker News. I have been working with Python for quite a while now. Although I am very productive with it I feel I might have grown far too comfortable with the language where I have started noticing it having disadvantages for my work and my personal growth. I am able to program in any language given some time and google. So solving a problem doesn't seem to be where I am lacking. I have been able to scratch a little more than the surface but not deep enough to actually use the language for whatever its strengths are advertised for. These include C, Java, Rust, Go, Bash, Javascript, Powershell where I have written trivial but useful programs. There are too many to choose from and I do not know which and how to choose. Languages which have been recommended to me include C, C++, Java, Go, Scala, Javascript/Typescript, Assembly, Scheme, OCaml, Common Lisp, Clojure, Kotlin, Erlang, Elixir, Haskell Can anyo

Ask HN: How do you deal with absolute failures? 3 by lifeplusplus | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm not talking about a situation when you had 5 things going and you lost top best 2, and ended up in not ideal but still manageable position. I'm talking about failures that will have life long consequences unless solution is found or miracle happens soon. When your last hope utterly shatters. When you have already tried multiple times and failed. When there is no space left behind you to retreat. When it's your fault too and lot of being unlucky. How do you deal with rejections and failures where everything was riding on it and you did 200% and hoped for the luck, but it still didn't work out just like last 10 times it before it. I guess I want to know how to rebound, how improve chances of success, how to not let every setback cause you to think back on last 1000 back to back failures. I've read all motivation quotes so don't cite them.

I left a message on their support channel with the screenshot [2] but fearing that they would not respond me and dismiss the case like they did last time [1] (they told me that showing me an ad for an internal product does not count as an ad), I got in touch with Dang asking if it was OK for me to write another post about it, since the last one got flagged. Before I got my answer from him, YouTube contacted me with a refund and an apology (in portuguese) [3]. This time I'd like to thank the YouTube team for the fast response and the apology. Ask HN: What is your biggest source of frustration with modern web development? 4 by VWWHFSfQ | 5 comments on Hacker News. There are many things about modern web development that frustrate and annoy people, but my two biggest issues: 1) A lot of SPA websites nowadays break my browser's Back button. I understand that this is "easy" to fix with push state/history APIs, etc. But it never used to be this way. Now you have to do all kinds of special stuff just to get the basic functionality of your web browser back. 2) SPA apps almost always have to be specially routed at the webserver level to the index.html. Again, it never used to be this way. Without any special server-side routing I now have to visit the main page and then follow a series of SPA links to get to the page I want. I can't just go directly there anymore because most likely the CDN or webserver will return a 404. Again, it never used to be this way. Fundamental aspects of the web have been broken. What

Ask HN: Should HN flaggers be public to users with X karma? 2 by throwawayfear | 5 comments on Hacker News. I saw a benign-but-valuable submission flagged. Otherwise, this place is no longer any better than reddit where astroturfing, gaslighting, and brigading are now the norm. These high-karma users would then be able to vet flags and remove flags that may be coordinated. We need to face the reality that there can be coordinated flagging that is designed to wedge an ideological bent into the flow of the conversation.

Ask HN: Where does the attention economy end? 3 by mlac | 3 comments on Hacker News. I can see how one's attention is valuable but hits a point of diminishing returns. At the extreme, one's attention is not valuable if that person spends his or her entire day consuming apps and not creating value (or working). His or her ad revenue will be worth less than someone with a job, if it is worth anything at all. This person will also use a lot of the organization's resources and have a high amount of "engagement" with the application. This makes Facebook's shift to young adults [1] seem more clear - that group can spend as much time as they want on Facebook and consumption, and they can then spend their parents' income. It's a constant fresh source of income with buying power. I roughly equate attention to time and energy - once it is spent, it is gone. On the whole, as billions of people spend their time and energy scrolling through ad-supported applicat

I know that live transcription is already a thing so it must be feasible, right? This feature would be super useful to see what was said without having to playback a bunch of vocal messages.

Ask HN: How do you do notes for a project?

Ask HN: How do you do notes for a project? 2 by davidwritesbugs | 0 comments on Hacker News. Sometimes for projects I need to keep a track of chatty things I'm wondering about, reminders of what I was thinking of about on project issues, or research done/needed, and lots of other diary type stuff for my projects. In the past I have just splattered comments in the code with all this in them, but that looks ugly amateurish and I'd be embarrassed to let other people or future collaborators see. I've taken to creating a diary.md file and sticking that in the .gitignore. What do people typically do?

Ask HN: Why doesn’t Apple make a standalone camera?

Ask HN: Why doesn’t Apple make a standalone camera? 4 by bigyikes | 6 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been wondering this a lot lately. Apple’s photo processing is just phenomenal. (You could probably say the same about other high end smartphone makers too) Moreover, popular camera software and build quality is just solidly “okay” in my experience. My thought is that if Apple were to produce full-size cameras, they would be far better than anything else on the market. I would probably buy one immediately. I’m wondering why they haven’t done it. Maybe making cameras is really hard? Cameras are too much of a commodity and the market is really saturated? Full size lenses are hard? Not enough profit margins? Maybe it would cannibalize iPhone sales? I’m curious to know what others think about a full-size Apple camera.

Ask HN: Senior Devs, what career have you moved on to avoid impeding doom? 19 by iExploder | 18 comments on Hacker News. The Premise: As I was browsing the job boards in the EU area, I was faced with several unpleasant realizations. Companies, for the most part, are looking for devs with 2-3 years of experience in a given tech. Having 10+ years of experience in anything is not required and might as well be considered against the applicant. Work is being off-shored to low income countries. Adding to that, stories of ye olde programmers bringing in major dough 15 years or so ago sound like fairy tales today. It would seem coding was reduced to gluing things up from pre-made blocks and is not viewed with awe and respect it once may have had. This all is written from perspective of a senior software dev in Europe. I realize FANG and or devs with extremely niche or trendy skills might not perceive this the same. However, I do wonder whether there are people like me who feel the impeding

Chat for every GitHub repository. Real-time 2 by HarryET | 0 comments on Hacker News. For the supabase hackathon recently me and 2 others made a chat app for GitHub repositories! It uses supabase's auth, database, storage and the realtime features and is open-source itself - https://ift.tt/3jzlG5w. Any support is awesome and I'm still actively working on new features like bots & profile UIs (an example for the profile UIs is here https://ghc.pw/harry)

Ask HN: I keep forgetting the new habits I'm trying to form 3 by traumivator | 1 comments on Hacker News. This is something I have been struggling with: Let's say the habit I want to form is daily meditation - research the topic a bit why this habit would beneficial - make a plan to meditate for 10 min every day - set up a daily reminder on my phone - first day: do a 10 min session - second day: do a 10 min session - third day: something happens and I skip the session - fourth day: I skip the session - fifth day: I skip the session etc. (and ignore the daily reminder on my phone) - a few weeks later: I am suddenly reminded of the habit I tried to form Any ideas how I can prevent losing track of the new habit after skipping once or twice? Or how I could regain my focus faster than after a few weeks?

Crypto and Fiat Currencies

Crypto and Fiat Currencies 2 by stuartdaa | 1 comments on Hacker News. Does anyone else wonder why economists, central bankers and other market commentators talk so much about exchange rates, and inflation targets; and never talk about the half-life of currencies? I find this quote from a central banker sobering… 1 Based on consumer price data, an item that cost R1 in 1960 would today cost R96.79. The rand has effectively lost 99% of its 1960 purchasing power. Given the high inflation in the second half of the twentieth century, figures for the major currencies are similar but not as extreme: the US dollar has lost 88%; the Swiss franc has lost 76%; and the British pound has lost 95% (based on the World Bank consumer price data).

Ask HN: Best modern approaches to building composable distributed systems?

Ask HN: Best modern approaches to building composable distributed systems? 2 by tytrdev | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey, folks. Looking for some insight on distributed systems setups but not exactly sure how to phrase it. Here goes: Does anyone know of any decent approaches to building organic systems of services that can be arbitrarily distributed? The two things that come to mind immediately are the BEAM and something like Kubernetes. I have no experience with Kubernetes, but it does seem a bit heavy handed. With the BEAM my concern would be platform buy-in for everything. I'm exploring ideas for a new system I'm planning, and I'd like to be able to mix and match different languages/platforms as time goes on, with a focus on building really small services that are composable and reusable. Is Kubernetes the best way to do this these days? Things I'm looking for: - No platform/language buy-in (each service/unit can do things however it needs to) - Hot reload of serv

I find them interesting. Even if I am not a fan of price speculation, there is no question that some super smart people are working on very interesting projects in the space. Just wondering if it is worth spending serious time learning smart contract development etc. Is it possible to build a career? If yes, what would the learning path look like?

Ask HN: Switch from Development to Security?

Ask HN: Switch from Development to Security? 13 by eftel | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I’ve been working as a software developer for the last 10 years. Fullstack with a strong tendency to Python in the backend. I’ve never really worked for a company as an employee. All I have done is working as a contractor/freelancer or for my own startups (with one semi successfull exit). Currently I’m working for a multi billion dollar company as a contractor, leading a small team of four people. I love programming but I was always interested in the security kind of things (the startup was security related). Is there a good way to transition from software development to security? What are my chances on getting an employment in a large-ish organisation without real job expierence in security? As a contractor, I’m currently making 120k EUR/year from Europe (100% remote). Is it realistic to find a remote position paying equally? My current contract will probably run out in around 6 months. I’m

Ask HN: Experienced devs (20+ yrs exp), are you getting interview calls? 5 by kpr21 | 11 comments on Hacker News. Apparently the tech job market is crazy. I started applying 2 weeks ago. Majority of the applications aren't even viewed. So far, I have had only two recruiter calls. Both didn't proceed since they were looking for hands on in particular areas. And I got a few rejection emails too.(Not sure if they are the usual automated Applicant Tracking System generated rejections or someone indeed looked at it). I fear my career in the software field is over. Questions. 1. Can we say the market good only for junior developers? How good/bad is it for the experienced ( 20+ years) individual contributors? 2. Is the job search worth the effort?. Would it be a better idea to learn some skills and start building something on your own? 3. My profile is decent and I work for a reasonably reputed company. But my linkedin profile is empty since I am not comfortable with others viewing
