Ask HN: eBay alternatives for computers, embedded components, and tools

Ask HN: eBay alternatives for computers, embedded components, and tools 3 by Dracophoenix | 1 comments on Hacker News. Amazon, NewEgg, Best Buy and Microcenter offer many options for PC-building components. But what stores currently provide FPGAs and soldering stations for the hobbyist for cheap outside of academic supply companies?

Ask HN:Does a startup community like this exist in SF? 3 by kvmxsh | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm looking for a community where a bunch of people are working on their startups after work hours/weekends, almost like a co-working space with a community feel - ideally people in their 20s/30s. Does something like this exist in San Francisco?

Is FPGA solving the silicon shortage problem in the long run? 3 by cariboulabs | 2 comments on Hacker News. instead of 500 types of MCUs in a single manufacturing line, create one type of silicon that you reconfigure. like Zynq but smaller, simpler. FPGAs are efficient and agile. so why not?

Looking for a Blub programmer without looking at Blub programmers

Looking for a Blub programmer without looking at Blub programmers 2 by VaedaStrike | 3 comments on Hacker News. It was the oddest experience yet in almost a decade experience of professional programming. A coding exercise for a 'blub' programming position at a company that claims to have all their code in 'blub'. Since this particular 'blub' dialect doesn't have a lot of native 'blub' programmers the company's coding exercise is geared towards non-'blub' programmers. But in this case they are interviewing a 'blub' programmer. In fact 'blub' is this programmer's favorite language. Upon opening the repo with the setup and the exercise instructions 2/3rd of the instructional links do not work. The programmer advises the company of this, the company representative claims that they are looking into it and will get back with an answer as soon as they can. After some time the candidate reaches out. No response, waits a few

Why does Apple allow Plaid apps in the App Store?

Why does Apple allow Plaid apps in the App Store? 4 by tehwebguy | 1 comments on Hacker News. In my opinion Plaid is one of the worst things to ever happen to individual data & financial security. Beyond creating the single greatest target for attacks it goes against one of the most fundamental rules: never share username & password with anyone. Handing your password over to Plaid gives them every bit of data accessible from your bank's web account. They can get as much information in the time it takes to screen scrape your account as the credit bureaus have collected on you in years. Their TOS lets them get everything available as far back as your bank will let them go and does not contain any financial guarantee whatsoever for when they are inevitably hacked. But now apps are being approved that use Plaid without even confirming to the user that they are talking to Plaid because it's all being done in-app! No one can tell if they are sending their bank login (usern

Ask HN: Dependency Graphs for Cloud Services?

Ask HN: Dependency Graphs for Cloud Services? 4 by machinerychorus | 0 comments on Hacker News. Are there any dependency graphs for cloud services? This seems to be pretty important info for determining how a system will degrade. For example, if Google Cloud Storage is down, will Google Artifact Registry go down? and if GAR is down, will Cloud Build be down? I have heard that there are "tiers" of services, with services in a given tier only using services from lower tiers, but I haven't been able to find any info on this, even unofficial blog posts or third party analysis. Does anyone know where I can find this info? Or have tips for figuring it out myself?

Ask HN: Where to begin learning how to generate procedural worlds? 5 by johnnyApplePRNG | 2 comments on Hacker News. I want to start writing 3d games, and have no clue where to begin. Been watching some youtube videos about perlin noise and 3d world generation in three.js and I think I'm starting to grasp the concepts but it's overwhelming atm. If you can suggest any tutorials or books to read I would greatly appreciate it.

Ask HN: How to make a game that will be easy for others to mod?

Ask HN: How to make a game that will be easy for others to mod? 3 by nassimsoftware | 4 comments on Hacker News. I want to develop a game and make it a hassle free experience for other developers to make mods for it. However, I don't want to open source my game because I would like to sell it. My idea was to create a kind of API that others could hook into to add and modify content in the game. The idea would be similar to a frontend using a REST API to interact with the backend. I wonder if there are best practices when it comes to making your game modable. How is it usually done by professionnal game devs?

Ask HN: Have you seen any Web3 products with broad adoption?

Ask HN: Have you seen any Web3 products with broad adoption? 3 by hubraumhugo | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm still very opposed to the idea of taking a technology and then searching a problem for it. Why? Back in 2017 during the first hype cycle, blockchain companies raised hundreds of millions with ICOs. I became very interested in the technology too, and some friends still work in this space. 4 years later in the web3 era, there is not a single product aside from trading/finance that got traction. Use cases like storing the history of a car on chain, transparent supply chains, public voting... this all sounds interesting but never made it to product market fit. I always assume that I'm wrong, so I'll keep looking for successful applications :)

Ask HN: Valuation models based on organic traffic?

Ask HN: Valuation models based on organic traffic? 2 by adzicg | 0 comments on Hacker News. Does anyone know a good valuation model based on organic (google search) traffic? I have a side-project website that over the years grew to attract some nice traffic, and a potential buyer contacted me about it, but I don't know how to price it. Because it was a side project, I never focused on monetising it, so ARR multiples would not really make any sense as a model (and I doubt that they would be interested in buying it for the ARR). My best guess is it's a proxy for one of the competitors, that want traffic, or someone who wants to boost it a bit and sell to the competitors. The site gets about 2.5m clicks per year from google search for keywords that, at least according to semrush, competitors are paying between 1.5 and 3 USD per click, so that traffic must be worth something. It's not even actively optimised for SEO (before anyone starts blaming me, it's a side-project),

Ask HN: How to start teaching my 3rd grader daughter computer programming?

Ask HN: How to start teaching my 3rd grader daughter computer programming? 2 by malshe | 5 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I tried teaching my daughter coding using Swift Playground as well as Python. I am a university professor but my problem is that I exclusively teach to masters and PhD students and I have no idea about how to teach coding to a child. My daughter liked some of the stuff but I quickly realized that I was unable to make my teaching relatable to her in any manner. It was way too abstract for her and also very boring. It would be great if you could share your experiences and advice on how to go about doing this. I don't want to push her lest she starts hating coding (and me!)
