Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use on your Linux desktop? 2 by hidden-spyder | 1 comments on Hacker News. I already use Feedly but am looking to switch to a native alternative. Part of the reason for me considering this switch is that I can't use RSS feed generators with Feedly. Feedly offers a paid option to make this possible, but I'd rather switch to an offline app.

Initial thoughts on internal design of server-less Redshift (announced today)

Initial thoughts on internal design of server-less Redshift (announced today) 2 by MaxGanzII | 0 comments on Hacker News. Historically, RS has nodes and slices. One node made of a given number of slices (varies by node type). Data is distributed over slices, and only the slice holding a block can access that block. These days, you have RA3. RA3 has data slices and compute slices. The “data slice” I think is a group of one or more network attached SSDs, and each compute slice is an EC2 instance. Data is still distributed over slices, but I empirically see now that any slice on a node can access any block which is on that node - that’s definitely not how it used to be. So I think what happens now is SSD is on the network, which is now a notional “data slice”, but there’s only one data slice per “node” (you don’t really have nodes any more - it’s more of a legacy billing concept), and you have a cloud of EC2 instances, but they’re each tied to one of the network attached SSD groups. So

Ask HN: As an outsider, how could I publish a white paper? 4 by eezurr | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN TL;DR: I probably created the fastest "find all K simple paths" algorithm for a weighted or unweighted, directed or undirected graph. How would I, as an outsider, publish the results? If I'm right, I'd like to benefit from this discovery to open doors to more interesting work/careers. (I fear, in my 30s, I am at a huge disadvantage for not having any big co. or university to list on my resume) Background: I am outside of the tech "scene" and have no tech/academia connections (self taught, no time spent in university). That being said, I've been programming and managing operations (working as the sole dev at small co.) for 10+ years. I recently quit my job to reevaluate my career path and for fun, started working on a city builder video game. The first big problem I had to solve was "how can I efficiently simulate people/cars utilizing ALL

Ask HN: Integrate Software Solution with Competitor's? 7 by temp088773 | 5 comments on Hacker News. I'm involved in a merger between two competing organisations. We're in the same market segment, but our software solutions differentiate themselves slightly differently. The stakeholders are obviously interested in seeing an integrated software solution that provides the strengths of the two existing solutions in one service. Obviously, there are technical challenges with this: the two existing solutions use extremely different tech stacks, where neither of which is appropriate for "plugging in" the other one. The technical people involved also want to take the opportunity to fix some long-standing scalability problems when it seems like they have to restructure the top-level architecture anyway. But I'm more concerned with organisational problems. I feel like most of these integrations easily turn out wrong or inferior to either original service. Do you have

I Am Boycotting YouTube's Like Button

I Am Boycotting YouTube's Like Button 6 by AHappyCamper | 9 comments on Hacker News. Google recently castrated the Dislike Button, and now you can press it, but it essentially does nothing. Because no-one can see any effect, no-one will really use it, and eventually, Google will remove it altogether. Once again, Google is following in Facebook's guidebook on how to implement 1984. By removing even this meagre ability to dissent, you take away people's ability to think about dissenting (1984). This is morally wrong, and it should offend the senses of any true engineer. Engineers (and other critical thinkers) make observations on the world based on the data they perceive. If the data is corrupted, skewed, or biased, then our observations are equally so. By removing a critical piece of data - people's dislike of a video, Google has corrupted the observations of their viewers, and in doing so, has made the world less honest. E.g. imagine you see a video on remedies for a

Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?

Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse? 2 by itchyjunk | 0 comments on Hacker News. I used to have better time googling in the past. I struggle to find things I remember finding in the past using google. I think I might be stuck in some old habits of googling and I've lost touch with modern google. For example, google seems to want full sentences instead of just keywords now. "How do I do X?" seems to get me better(?) results then "X + some relevant keyword". But I can't seem to get past this "most popular responses" google things I need. I do appreciate youtube videos marked at certain times but watching video isn't always what I want to do. Tangentially, has youtube search been integrated to youtube search or something now? I used to be able to search obscure music in youtube. "Sal dulu a" would both recommend "Sal dulu antasma" and list it but now unless i search for that particularly, it doesn't sho

Better to open a crypto account or savings account for my children? 3 by rose_daniel | 3 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I am a young dad who starting to save for my kids. I was wondering whats the smarter play - Should I set up recurring payments into a tax-sheltered savings account (e.g. junior ISA in the UK) or get a crypto wallet and start saving Bitcoin? The idea is that I can get them a head start about learning about the space as they get older and have an initial investment. On the other side, there is a natural downside risk of the volatility of the asset. Curious to hear your thoughts!

Ask HN: How do you recruit beta testers for your SaaS? 6 by clmntrg | 1 comments on Hacker News. I work full-time at slite.com. We've been around for 5 years and done well. For a number of reasons, we recently decided to pivot. We're developing a unique product for a small, growing, market we love: async-first communication (understand documentation + discussions). Our success will massively rely on growing our (free) beta waitlist: 1. Bringing design partners on board and iterate with them on new releases 2. Hoping this will lead to a big public launch → Do any of you have experience building beta waitlists? How would you approach that in our context? Thanks, and looking forward to reading your thoughts! @clementrog

Ask HN: Are Indeed, LinkedIn the go-to places for exploring new jobs? 19 by brayhite | 10 comments on Hacker News. I've worked at my current company since my college internship in 2012, and have not sought a new gig in all of that time. The company was a travel tech startup that I joined as an early employee, and it was acquired a few years ago. The app is still active and supported, but it feels time to start exploring what else is out there. In case it matters, my background is largely in various QA and product roles, most recently transitioning from project management to product management. Are the traditional places like Linkedin and Indeed the best places to upload resumes, update skills, etc.? Do I need to fully dive into the job-hunting waters and network with recruiters to get a good idea of where I "stack" so to speak?

Real-World Cryptography

Real-World Cryptography 2 by baby | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey folks. I wrote a book on applied cryptography during the last two years and published it a few months back. It’s brand new, it’s the first crypto book with a chapter on cryptocurrencies (if that’s your thing), and it packs all the types of cryptography I had to work on during my career. It’s made to be the most approachable book for people who want to know more about crypto basics, as well as designs used by large companies at scale, think end to end encryption with the signal protocol, SSL/TLS, HSMs, and others. If you’re thinking “did we really need another cryptography book?” I wrote something for you a while back: https://ift.tt/3dZyKMc That’s it! Also, do companies typically allow college interns to start over winter break or during the semester or do roles only really start in the summer? Accepted and ghosted: interviewing for a leadership position at Stripe 55 by danrocks | 13 comments on Hacker News. Recently I interviewed with Stripe for an engineering MoM (Manager of Managers) for one of their teams. I interview regularly, so I am used to many types of processes, feedback mechanisms, and so on. I won't go into details about the questions because there's nothing special about them, but I wanted to share some details of my experience for people thinking of interviewing there. 1) About 35-40% of the interviewers started their questioning by saying "I will only need 20 minutes for this", while emphasizing it is an important leadership position that they are hiring for. So 20 minutes is all needed to identify "important, critical leaders"? What a strange thing to say - also a GREAT way to make candidates feel important and wanted! 2) There is significant shuffling of interviewers and schedules. One almost has to be on-call to be able to rea

If you're not familiar here is a short summary of what the Foundation is: Foundation is set in the future, when the world is barely remembered, and humans have colonized the galaxy. The book introduces Hari Seldon, a brilliant visionary and psychohistorian whose job is to use mathematics and probability to predict the future. Seldon does not have the ability to prevent the decline of humanity that he predicts. Instead, he gathers together the galaxy’s top scientists and scholars on a bleak outer planet and sets out to preserve the accumulated knowledge of humankind, and begin a new civilization based on art, science, and technology. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation and designs it to withstand a dark age of ignorance, barbarism,

Ask HN: Are managed DB so important?

Ask HN: Are managed DB so important? 2 by juanse | 1 comments on Hacker News. In the past I've been deploying everything (application + DB) in the same server for small projects. I didn't have the need to split the DB into another server, but I think it wouldn't be a big issue. The think is that I will start something that I hope it will become a SME -I know for sure it won't be Internet Scale-, but people tell that using a managed database is a must. My question is: Given that I am already proficient with Linux, and my cloud service makes automatic snapshots (besides other rsync backup I do), Is it really such a big deal?

Ask HN: What's your startup's BI tool/setup? 4 by corrius | 4 comments on Hacker News. I am a software/data engineer who is stepping up as the responsible of data in a 30-person startup and one of the first assignments is to choose and get up and running a BI tool so people that don't know SQL can explore data, create/look at dashboards and export data. Now that I am looking into this problem I am curious what are other startups solutions to this. - Is the CTO or one of the engineers taking requests and running queries and sending csv/excel files back? - Do business people at your company know SQL so they can run their own? - Do you run your own BI tool? If that's the case, which one? I guess most startups at this level don't need a BI tool but we have do as we have a strong business side and no-one knows SQL outside the engineering team.

When and why did that happen? I found a certain level of value in knowing how popular an opinion was or how much it had seemingly been engaged with, and now miss that feature. To manage subscriptions I’m planning to use a service like Chargebee/Recurly/Chargify or maybe just Stripe. What I don’t see is a product that marries these 2 services. Is there a reason most SaaS companies end up developing their own licensing provisioning tools? It seems like this is another product/service that could be offered? I don’t feel my requirements are all that unique. I basically need a customer front end that allows subscription owners to assign licenses to specific user identities. My app would then just have to validate that the current user has an active/paid subscription. Am I overlooking a product or service that’s already out there? Or is this something I’m going to have to d

Thoughts on selling source code (Shopify and Quickbooks style web app)

Thoughts on selling source code (Shopify and Quickbooks style web app) 2 by brendaningram | 0 comments on Hacker News. I've been working on this product in various forms for 20 years. It's never been a commercial product. It's effectively site building (e.g. Wix or Squarespace) plus e-commerce (e.g. Shopify or BigCommerce) plus accounting (e.g. Xero or Quickbooks) in the one app. Whenever I've run a business that required e-commerce and accounting I've been frustrated by having to use 2 different platforms and subscriptions, so I intended to write my own. Unfortunately I have lost interest in coding (20 years as a working software engineer) and I'd like to either sell the code or give it to someone that has the means and motivation to take it to market. I have no interest in any ongoing royalty or ownership. If anyone has thoughts on this, people that may be interested, advice... I'm all ears. Thanks :)

I'm interested in hearing your experience and advice on how someone from outside the EU would go about finding an entry/junior level job with visa/relocation sponsorship in Europe. More specifically: - How much of an investment is a visa sponsorship from the company's standpoint? Is it something that is only really done for senior employees? - Is there a specific subset of companies that are more likely to be open to relocation? In terms of company size, country, area of work, etc... Any firsthand experience from a recruiter's point of view would also be greatly appreciated. A bit of background information about myself for those who would like to give more specific answers. - graduating with Associate's in CE this spring - about 1yr work experience mostly in devops/cloud and some in SE - interested in cloud/infrastructure and maybe shifting towards development in

Ask HN: What's the best way to secure your workstation? 13 by bccdee | 3 comments on Hacker News. Here's a very plausible threat: Some developer with a left-pad package, some dependency-of-a-dependency, injects malware into their library. A developer (who is broadly trustworthy) updates their package's dependencies without auditing them properly, and the malware ends up in a VSCode plugin that you use. You open VSCode, your system is infected. We know this sort of malware is making its way onto package repositories [1]. We know people are falling for these attacks. How do we protect ourselves against this family of threats? [1]: https://ift.tt/3eIvIio We could trust nothing beyond our base system and our browser, and refuse to use any code we don't fully audit, but this would be an impossibly austere way to live. I expect most of us, when pressed, would admit that we're trusting much more code than we would like to. The alternative is sandboxing, using a lightwei

Ask HN: Any interesting forks of TypeScript (or languages inspired by it)? 2 by prmph | 1 comments on Hacker News. What would typescript look like if it were freed from the shackles of JavaScript? Could it be a first class language compiled to machine code, .NET IL, or wasm, with runtime type checking, and cleaner and less bloated? Are there any forks of Typescript (or TypeScript-like languages) exploring these ideas? Rationale for Question: After using TypeScript for some years, I find C#, as good a language as it is, fairly clunky. C# lacks many things that make TypeScript so expressive: straightforward first-class functions and union types, for example. I think my ideal language would be something that marries the best parts of C# and TypeScript.

I've seen just about everything you could want, and participated in many communities over the years, and I feel everything is just 'samey' now and follows the same pattern. It's hard for anything on The Internet to stand out and be unique (at least for me). YMMV on this. Now with Web3/NFTs/cryptocurrency people are building an abstraction layer on top of the web and want to decentralize all the things, which is good to see, but I want to see all that fleshed out properly before I dive into it and leverage it. This is the shiny thing I look forward to on the web, but it's still early days. Other than that, the web seems kinda boring lately. Are you jaded about the web too? I'd like to hear yo

Ask HN: Product Owner lacking Numbers, problem? 3 by anotheryou | 0 comments on Hacker News. Throughout my career I had too little exposure to metrics. How do I change that? My current job: B2B2C with few but big customers, currently a merge happening with lots of integration work, no focus on metrics. I tried to push for them since a year now, but there is also slight feature creep and a general lack of focus causing various other priorities. How problematic is it for my career? With my last job search I already felt inadequately experienced in that topic, even though I'm generally good at numbers and would love to track some stats. What kept me away from metrics in my old jobs: - B2B2C Startup 1: feature creep (made me quit), boss did not want to implement tracking. Did at least do qualitative testing observing users. - B2B2C Startup 2 (freshly acquired): with low customer numbers, ever moving targets (ultimately made me quit again).

Ask HN: Do FAANG and hire designer developers? 4 by thrawayUnicorn | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi all, For my entire career (15+ years) I’ve worked at startups as a designer who codes. I really enjoy the startup scene, wearing multiple hats, and shipping quickly. The older I get though, the more the opportunity cost of not joining a FAANG type is weighing on my mind financially. I’ve never applied to one of these companies, and while I know my skill set is incredibly valuable to startups where urgency and velocity are important, I’ve wondered if I could even be hired at a much larger company where urgency seems less critical, and roles seem more specialized… I’m sure I could apply as only a designer or front end dev, but I really enjoy both and would hate to give one up. If you work at one of these companies, have you ever worked with a colleague who does both? or do you? And if so, how was the experience? Thank you!

SAFEs are becoming more and more common for early staged startups in my country (NZ), for good reasons of course. However, our startup has raised multiple small priced rounds and our investors have pre-emptive rights on new share issues. I could code this from scratch, but holy cow I'd really prefer not to. :-) My use case: I'm a domain expert for the content, and also a senior dev. I'm comfortable with most programming languages and tools. Is Discourse a good choice? I don't necessarily need the forum, although its forum support is fantastic. Does it have good support (maybe with an extension) for FAQs? The Ghost Blogging platform also looks like very high quality, but on the downside it's not really a collaborative platform out of the box. How about static site generators? Jekyll or something else? If the Q&A is GitHub based, then that'd work, but it wouldn't be very accessible to non-techie people. Anything else I should consider? I'm ok with for-pay in addition to hosting my own.

The deepfake videos are very realistic too, if I hadn't know her better or know about the hacking it would be very easy to believe it was real... I tried to explain NFTs and crypto to family on Thanksgiving, but I don't think I was able to get it across across. I should have mentioned that many years before NFTs you could buy land on the Moon and get a certificate of ownership. There is no legal framework for owning land on the Moon, but that doesn't have to stop you from setting up a market for Moon land with your friends and trading your Moon acres for goods and services. As long as a group of people decided to use Moon land as money, they can use it as a way of enabling transactions. Like Monopoly money, it's essentially a way of keeping score of who owns what. Like casino chips, you might even be able to exchange them for dollars if the market owner (the casino) finds it profitable to maintain the illusion that they are real money. Just don't try to buy groceries with casino chips. The operativ

I would like to limit my 'consumption' (of information) and focus on 'creating' or 'producting' something to bring more engagement to my day to day life. I came to this conclusion as I have recently realized (and this may be obvious to others already) that while there is a absurd amount of benefit of having worlds information at your finger tips, one negative side effect is that consumption of information is so high we don't even realize it..kinda like fish not noticing water. Specially consumption without focus. In other words I'd consuming all kinds of information that may be very interesting but may never be materially useful to me or my goals. Started with Objective C and Java and then moved to Swift and Kotlin. I don't have much web dev experience though (mostly vanilla JS) but do have lots of mobile dev and backend dev experience in node js and bit of Rust. Have you switched from native to cross platform dev? Have you tried both flutter and react native? Which one did you prefer and why? Thanks! Edit: I did start learning flutter yesterday and it seems pretty decent so far. 2 problems I do have are: 1. Too must nesting (which some say can be solved by breaking down everything into smaller widgets but seems like a lot of extra code work). 2. Flutter for web dev is absolute trash and useless as it seems to just draw the content using canvas instead of actually creating the html tree.

As someone who has enjoyed the worlds of Isaac Asimov's fiction for many years, I was excited to watch the TV adaptation[0] of his Foundation series. I expected a good deal of re-imagining of the original novels, as Asimov's story spans centuries and recasting the series every few episodes would be both challenging and wouldn't allow viewers to invest in specific characters -- which is a big no no in television. I also expected some story lines to be combined with others, and some to be excised, in order to maintain a reasonable (for TV) number of plot lines in the story being told. However, I did not expect the show to veer so far from the novels as to completely change the narrative of the story. That Salvor Hardin was gender-switched was perfectly fine, and even the reveal of the Second Foundation (and, even more, the reveal of its location) d

Many online services (relative to the past) have reasonably secure login systems with two factor authentication using codes, hardware tokens, and so forth. However one aspect that doesn't get as much attention is how things are handled in cases of failures. Some services err on the paranoid side and strongly incentivize you to have backup methods of recovery (Such as backup tokens) or have things become very tricky which could be considered good from a defense (Google APP) In contrast, there have been other incidents such as the incident of the owner of the Twitter handle @N having one of his domains hijacked by social engineering of GoDaddy support to pivot to control of his Twitter account[1] Since then. GoDaddy has fallen victim to other incidents of this nature[2]. Not advocating the use of GoDaddy, but was just illustrating these as case studies. Go

It's a passion and a hobby of mine, my current employer is fully aware of my "side hustles" and most managers I have worked with in my career have always been welcoming as these side projects tend to really stretch our knowledge. I am sure I am not alone. Now, the problem I currently face is about one of my projects under the guise of The Night Project (https://ift.tt/3cOlewE) Like all projects, I tend to stumble at the point of financials (funding) or resources (people) - And sadly this project I am about to share

Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?

Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry? 3 by itchyjunk | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am not sure if it's something about the turkey itself or the ways generally employed to cook them, but dry turkey seems to be a common theme of discussion among people during thanksgiving. Although, it might also be my own biases that makes me think it's a common enough issue. So I figured HN would be a reliable enough group to ask if they have run into this problem/ found their own unique solutions.

Ask HN: How to find if a product is "really" on sale?

Ask HN: How to find if a product is "really" on sale? 2 by siddharthgoel88 | 0 comments on Hacker News. As I have noticed that article from bbc.com on fake Black Friday sale, the questions comes down to how the user would know if the prices have really dropped or it is just a price manipulation game by the platforms like Amazon. On searching around a bit, I stumbled upon https://ift.tt/3uctfCI which has a kind of price audit of products on different Indian platforms which is kind of cool and I will try this out. But are there other such platforms which solve this problem? Does someone here use some useful tips/tricks to buy a product at optimal price?

Ask HN: IMAP2Git

Ask HN: IMAP2Git 2 by l0b0 | 2 comments on Hacker News. All mail clients suck. It seems every single one needs a lot of configuration effort to have a decent experience, most of them have really slow search, and several of them have unrecoverably deleted messages seemingly at random. I'm tempted to try managing my email using Git, one file per email. It'll be super fast and reliable, and I won't have to ever worry about losing my emails after they are safely copied to several separate devices. Is this feasible? Specifically: - Is there any decent software to save all messages from the IMAP server to one file per message on a regular basis? They'd have to at least have some sensible filenames, like date + subject. - Are there any Linux and Android clients which will read files from such a folder? I don't mind to `adb push` the repository if necessary, but if I have to read them using a text editor that'll be a blocker.

Pushing People into IT

Pushing People into IT 5 by trabant00 | 1 comments on Hacker News. This comment was inspired by a submission that has been flagged. While the context of the article was about women, this is a generalized problem. Boys are just as much the victims of parent ambition as girls are. That said, here is my original comment: One thing I do not understand regarding regarding college diplomas overproduction is the push for more women in IT. We all know over here that IT is not the sunshine and flowers industry it sometimes looks like from outside. There's plenty of psychical and mental health hazards. For the first time in 20 years I now have more women colleagues than man. Of course we should accept anybody who is passionate about IT into the field, but pushing people into it? In my team right now there's an junior engineer girl who is absolutely WOW, I have only seen one more junior so bright and passionate in my career. But there's also two junior engineer girls, the project o

Ask HN: How to handle being bad at school?

Ask HN: How to handle being bad at school? 2 by bush-bby | 0 comments on Hacker News. The last time I got straight A’s was middle school. After high school I took a few years to work/travel/ figure out what I like…as I wasn’t finding it in school. I’ve found an interest-more so a passion-in technology. I like writing code, I like solving problems, and knowing how things work. I’ve had trouble however finding employment in the industry without a degree…I know this is not many peoples experience but it has been mine. Therefore, I’ve starting going back to school. But I just can’t seem to hack it. I think it’s poor time Managment and general apathy. When implementing something in code I find interesting for example, I’m able to spend 16/hours a day every day until it’s complete. I’m not very good at pushing myself to finish things I don’t care about. I have pretty bad adhd, but my focusing problems really aren’t a limiting factor to success. I’m failing my very into level prereqs and o

How to Understand the GUI API of macOS?

How to Understand the GUI API of macOS? 2 by mayureshkathe | 2 comments on Hacker News. How could one go about probing the internals of macOS to learn about the API driving it's GUI? It would be useful while providing GUI handling capabilities using a language not supported by Apple.

How can MacBooks be so slim compared to others laptops

How can MacBooks be so slim compared to others laptops 3 by donboscow | 5 comments on Hacker News. There are so many laptops out there - Thinkpad, SurfaceBooks, Dell Inspiron, etc. How come they are so bulkier compared to Macbooks? Macbooks are so slim and lightweight, while an Inspiron or Thinkpad is so bulky and thick. Which engineering aspect is superior in case of Macbooks that makes it slimmer and less bulkier compared to those? Is it the OS - the way it has been written, it requires less cooling and hence lesser bulk? Or is it something else?

Ask HN: How to motivate someone who has lost perspective?

Ask HN: How to motivate someone who has lost perspective? 8 by _u | 0 comments on Hacker News. Last year I created an online order system for my youth movement which enabled us to sell anything we wanted online. This was needed as an alternative to the real-life events we could no longer organise and allowed us to continue financing our activities. Recently, a man (~ aged 65-80) sent me an e-mail in which he told me he was impressed by the system I created (I guess because it automatically sends a personalized e-mail with his order details). He also told me he was interested in informatics (mentioning Excel and C#) but has lost perspective. He seemed upset about that. I have been thinking how I can help this kind man to regain his perspective in informatics but nothing suitable has crossed my mind so far. That is why I decided to ask HN. What are fun things to study/create/implement/think about? Or what is something he could do to impress his friends with? Or more general, what seem

Ask HN: What are the early signs of singularity?

Ask HN: What are the early signs of singularity? 2 by itchyjunk | 0 comments on Hacker News. Post singularity, people (?) might look back and attribute certain events as a major indicator of the impending singularity. But for someone without the hind sight, looking into the future, what types of indicator would you look for? Also assuming that even if singularity is achieved (?) at some locations, the effects would take times to spread. Say it's already reached at the opposite corner of the world. How long would it take for it to be apparent and what are some indicators? Also, happy thanksgiving.

Ask HN: What’s the Best TV to Buy?

Ask HN: What’s the Best TV to Buy? 2 by colpabar | 0 comments on Hacker News. I’m in the market for a new TV. I’d like it to be as dumb as possible. I don’t subscribe to any streaming services and download everything through torrents. I don’t want a TV that requires an internet connection and I really don’t want it to do anything other than display what I send to it. What’s the best TV for someone like me? It doesn’t have to be totally dumb; I know these are expensive and I’m ok with a few features. But I need to be able to ignore them and I don’t want it to stop working when the manufacturer rolls out an “update”.
