Nintendo Switch System Update 18.0.0 Adds New Auto-Sleep Option, More

Nintendo has released the next big update for the Switch, which applies to all models of the console (Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch - OLED Model). Update Ver. 18.0.0 adds 15 minutes as an option for auto-sleep when playing on TV, adds Korean as a supported language for the parental controls introduction video, and that old chestnut: system stability improvements. That’s all the update does according to Nintendo’s patch notes , although dataminers are already digging into the details to find out more. Dataminer OatmealDome has so far uncovered a handful of changes to the Switch’s bad word list. “Nintendo constantly aims to improve the functionality of its systems and services in order to provide the easiest, most user-friendly experience possible,” Nintendo said. “As a part of these efforts, we are making Nintendo Switch system updates available for download via the internet.” As is usually the case, your Switch will automatically download the system upd...

World of Warcraft Subscription Numbers Are Higher Now Than at Expansion Launch in a Franchise First

It's easy to roll your eyes and say that MMORPGs are dead if you, ya know, don't play MMORPGs. But 20-year-old World of Warcraft still seems to have plenty of spring in its step, according to Warcraft general manager John Hight. Its latest expansion, Dragonflight, has more subscribers now than it did at launch, and one intrepid content creator thinks they may have extrapolated roughly how many: over 7 million. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, Hight explained that World of Warcaft historically has a very predictable pattern of subscriber churn. When an expansion comes out, there's a surge in subscribers that slowly declines over the course of an expansion, with small bumps at each new patch. It hits a low point at the end of each expansion, then surges again when a new one is released. World of Warcraft: Classic disrupted the pattern somewhat by creating another series of peaks connected with its own releases. Hight described it as a "constant inflow and o...

Final Fantasy 16 Could Be Coming to Other Platforms After PC Port, Producer Yoshi-P Hints

Producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida has hinted that Final Fantasy XVI could be coming to other platforms after the PC version is released. The game was first released for PlayStation 5 back in June 2023 and is coming to PC at some point in the future. Yoshida and DLC director Takeo Kujiraoka spoke with Noisy Pixel about the future of Final Fantasy XVI and its characters after The Rising Tide DLC launches in April . When asked if it's tough for the team "to say goodbye to all these characters in this DLC," Yoshida responded that it's not quite the end for Final Fantasy XVI yet. “It’s not over in the sense that we have the PC version,” Yoshida explained. “Once the PC version is released, we’re thinking about hopefully moving to other platforms as well.” Yoshida continued, “So, there is a sense that while the project is still going, there is not that sense of being sad and having to leave them yet.” Square Enix hasn’t confirmed Final Fantasy XVI for any oth...

Dragon’s Dogma 2 to Get ‘Start New Game’, Art of Metamorphosis Item Boost, Max 30fps Option, and More in Future Patch

Capcom has revealed planned updates for the recently released Dragon’s Dogma 2 . The headline here is the addition of the option to start a new game when save data already exists. Inexplicably, Dragon’s Dogma 2 does not include this option, although modders have already brute forced it into the PC version . Elsewhere, Capcom said it will boost the number of Art of Metamorphosis items available at Pawn Guilds to 99. Art of Metamorphosis lets you edit your character, and is one of many day-one microtransactions Capcom is currently selling for real-world money . Meanwhile, Dragon’s Dogma 2 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S will get various graphics and performance options, including a toggle for motion blur and ray tracing. Crucially, Capcom will add the option to switch frame-rate to either variable or max 30fps. Players have criticized Dragon’s Dogma 2’s frame-rate , which Capcom has said is linked to stress put on CPUs by a large number of NPCs. It’s worth noting that Capco...

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Rumors Fuelled by Final Fantasy 14 Director Yoshi-P

The director of Final Fantasy 14 has sparked renewed rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake. Speaking during PAX East , Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida announced Final Fantasy 9-themed extras for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail , including Final Fantasy 9’s Ark summon as a Final Fantasy 14 mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion (Garnet, aka Dagger, is one of the main characters of Final Fantasy 9). If you pre-order Dawntrail, you get a wind-up Zidane minion. Zidane is the protagonist of Final Fantasy 9. Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for Final Fantasy 14 wouldn’t be much to write home about on their own, but it’s what Yoshi-P said on-stage alongside their announcement that has truly set tongues wagging. "You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret,” he said before zipping his mouth shut. Final Fantasy 9 remake rumors have swirled around Sq...
