Sports Story: Switch Indie Blocks Access to Room That Criticized Development

A new patch for Sidebar Games' Sports Story has altered dialogue from a secret room that contained complaints about development. This secret room was never intended to be seen by players, and was uncovered shortly after launch . This new patch was supposed to remove access to the room entirely, but some players still managed to find a way in. Sidebar Games even addressed the room in its latest patch notes, writing, "Blocked access to the secret dev room." The original conversation in this secret room talked about troubles during development, with lines like, "You might say we're experiencing a troubled development," and, "You might also say somebody kept requesting new features and my original vision no longer exists." The Sports Story dev room is actually still accessible, but the dialogue has changed #NintendoSwitch pic.twitter.com/h8Ch5Z6f2X — tendog (@tend0g) January 29, 2023 But now, as reported by Eurogamer , the room now contains...

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The Adventure Game Review

Image
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been ported to just about every platform imagineable, so it was only a matter of time before it became a board game . This cardboard version acts as a prequel to the video game. It puts forth a new plotline in which players are the last surviving members of the legendary Blades -- a group of warriors dedicated to protecting the Empire of Tamriel. Members of your company are being assassinated and time is short, so you’re thrust into an initial investigation spanning the length of the empire. This is the first campaign of two, each campaign offering a short multi-session arc divided into story chapters. The second campaign juts off the first narrative with outcomes tumbling forward and affecting future plays. This structure is actually pretty enticing. You grab a basic character archetype such as a sneaky Khajit or a formidable Nord, outfit yourself with starting equipment, and then dive right into exploring Skyrim. You can swap characters and players...

MMO player grinds god-awful minigame tokens for 8 years, breaks in-game XP tracker by blowing it all in 49 seconds

First reported by GamesRadar , an Old School RuneScape player with the handle NC State (presumably not an official representative of the Raleigh-based university) finally sought his reward for grinding an infamous minigame, the Brimhaven obstacle course, for eight years . As outlined by a friend, user h0dgep0dge on Reddit, NC State finally brought his journey home, turning in all of his banked rewards at once and gaining 178 million XP in RuneScape's suboptimal Agility skill in less than a minute. This was such a rapid influx that the game's built-in experience per hour tracker couldn't keep up: it tapped out at 2.147 billion even though NC State was progressing at a rate of 10.8 billion per hour . Agility in RuneScape is not exactly the long-running MMO's sexiest skill: It's associated with cool rogue stuff like the Graceful Outfit in-game, but mechanically it just gives you more stamina and lets you access assorted shortcuts throughout the map. One of the pri...

HyperX's January keycap was a cute winter kitty and I missed it

Image
For fans of cute keycaps, I have some bad news. HyperX dropped its monthly collectable keycap for the end of January, and it sold out almost immediately. This month's keycap featured a snuggly kitty all rugged up in his winter's best, and if you're anything like me you're a little annoyed that you missed your chance to bag one of these cuddly kitties.  The aptly named HyperX Cozy Cat Keycap Coco features a little striped tabby to sit atop your key of choice. This light brown kitty has darker stripes, a little pink nose and ears, and a white tum just daring you to rub it. He'd look perfect sitting atop your Escape key, ready to knock something over. Wrapped around Coco's neck is a teal scarf with knitted line details, a snowflake pattern, and his name printed across the back. Off to one side atop his head is a matching HyperX themed beanie with white pom-pom. Honestly, at this point I'm not sure if I want the keycap or to steal this cat's winter drip ...

Fight through the Greek afterlife with blade and shot in this grimy, gilded FPS

Image
"Slay hordes of creatures on the black sands of Purgatory and sell their gold-stained corpses to craven priests," Perish 's description on Steam begins. "Kill magnificent bosses and use the proceeds to gain access to Elysium, a place of cosmic revelations." Say no more, I'm in. Every frame of this co-op FPS looks like it could be metal album art—it's inspired by Greek mythology, but feels extremely fresh. Instead of white marble columns and clean Corinthian helms, everything's greasier in Perish, its gold color palette conferring a real sickly quality. It's raining blood in the second area of Perish's free demo, and my favorite shot of its Steam trailer shows an alien sky with multiple moons beyond a series of floating ruins. This stuff's rad . I unlocked a gun pretty quick in the demo, but I just couldn't put down the starting hatchet weapon. Similar to Fatshark's offerings, developer Item42's really nailed the feelin...

Dead Island 2 will have cards instead of a skill tree

It's wild to think that Dead Island 2 may only be a few months away. A sequel to the 2011 holiday in someone else's misery was first announced in 2014 with Yager at the helm, then in 2016 it was announced that Sumo Digital had taken over, and now Dambuster Studios will be bringing it over the finish line, having started development from scratch four years ago. In a recent quickfire interview with Game Informer (via the NME ), Dambuster's lead narrative designer Khan and creative director James Worrall answered 86 questions about Dead Island 2, covering its Los Angeles location, attention-grabbing trailer, and how the skill system will work, among other things. The original Dead Island had skill trees for each character, with three branches covering Combat, Survival, and Fury abilities. Asked if the sequel would also have a skill tree, Khan replied, "There's a skill deck, which is even better." Expanding on that, Worrall described the skill deck as, "...

A free Per Aspera expansion lets you urbanize a green, verdant Mars

Image
Mars terraforming simulator Per Aspera has released a new, free DLC called Home about making Mars more livable. New features expand the process of terraforming Mars to include deeper, broader coverage of flora and larger, more habitable open-air cities for Earth's population to move into. It shifts the goal of Per Aspera to include a post-game, where once terraforming would have been considered complete, you can now keep playing to more deeply develop a livable ecosystem on the red planet. There are also new mechanics like desertification if you make Mars too hot, and dynamic water levels concerning water purity. The developers' update also includes new buildings like atmospheric humidifiers and more advanced open-air farming. It'll also have massive Metropolis cities, and open-ocean water treatment plants and pumps to feed them the volume of water that many humans need. You can even migrate in new colonists via space elevator. Per Aspera is a combination of resource ...
