NBA 2K25 Review

Over the past few years, developer Visual Concepts’ focus on updating online features and adding more microtransactions has left the meat of its annualized basketball series a forgettable merry-go-round of rehashed ideas and uninspired modes. But NBA 2K25 feels different, like a grizzled league veteran and the definition of a perennial starter. There are still gaps in its game, but solid fundamentals and a willingness to adapt help make it a reliable part of any rotation. Or, in this case, a novel and innovative entry that can win new fans and bring back oldheads alike. If the action on the court weren’t excellent, no one would have any reason to tolerate the cruft that 2K insists on tacking on around it. Make no mistake, you still can’t teach a long-running basketball sim a lot of radical new tricks, and 2K25 is still very recognizable. But that doesn’t mean you can’t polish it until it becomes as smooth as Steph Curry’s buttery jumper. This is where the return of what Visual Conce

Funko Fusion Review

At this point it almost seems that licensed Funko Pop figurines are being birthed into the world at a greater rate than actual human babies, so it makes sense that someone finally scooped up a bunch of these block-headed bookshelf warmers and stuck them in their own video game. Funko Fusion structures its campaign around seven beloved TV shows and films, including Masters of the Universe and Jurassic World, and stuffs it with iconic pop culture cameos from everyone from Marty McFly to Mega Man. However, despite the fact it certainly appears faithful to the distinctive Funko style at first glance, its meaningless story, mind-numbingly repetitive mission design, and maddening game-breaking bugs cause the whole thing to topple over like a doll with a head that’s too big for its body. Effectively a third-person shooter spin on the tried-and-tested LEGO videogame formula (à la LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga) right down to the way literally every object around you can be belligerently

Suda51 Says Everyone Pays 'Too Much Attention' to Metacritic Scores and Forces Games Into a 'Formula'

No More Heroes developer Goichi Suda, aka Suda51, believes the gaming community “cares too much” about review scores on sites like Metacritic. The Grasshopper Manufacture CEO opened up about his grievances during an interview GamesIndustry.biz conducted with him and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. Suda explains he’s concerned that game creation is becoming formulaic as a result of desires to reach higher scores, adding that many companies might not be interested in projects that don’t fit in with that formula. “Everybody pays too much attention to and cares too much about Metacritic scores,” he said. “It's gotten to the point where there's almost a set formula – if you want to get a high Metacritic score, this is how you make the game.” Suda continued: “If you've got a game that doesn't fit into that formula, that marketability scope, it loses points on Metacritic. The bigger companies might not want to deal with that kind of thing. That might not be the ma

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Exclusive First Hands-On Preview

It’s been ten long years since Dragon Age: Inquisition and the expectations for the next game in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, seem impossible. A full decade, a bevy of behind-the-scenes changes , cuts at BioWare , and a somewhat divisive start when its unveiling began in earnest in June made me a little worried for my most highly anticipated game of the year. But one of my biggest concerns was my impression, based on early previews , that it was headed in the direction of being a linear action game rather than its more open-world predecessor. While Dragon Age is known for changing its style with each installment, I hoped dearly that it wouldn’t lose too much of the DA DNA I fell in love with. After hours of hands-on time spread across two days, I’m pleased to say I walked away with excitement and curiosity, but mostly, relief to wave many of my concerns goodbye . My time with The Veilguard covered a wide smattering of things: the incredibly expansive character creator (

Big PS5 Update Adds Welcome Hub, Party Share, and More New Features

Sony has released a significant update for the PS5 that adds a Welcome hub, Party Share, and more new features. Unfortunately the update does not add themes or folders, two of the most-requested features from PS5 owners. VP of product management at Sony Interactive Entertainment Hiromi Wakai unveiled PS5 system software update 24.06-10.00.00 on the PlayStation Blog , with its patch notes, below, published to the PlayStation website . The Welcome hub is a new personalized space with customizable widgets and backgrounds in your PS5 home screen. Welcome hub is a reimagined version of the Explore tab, Wakai said, which was previously only available in the U.S. It will roll out globally over the next few weeks, starting today for select players in the U.S. Elsewhere, Party share will roll out globally in the coming weeks. This will allow you to invite a friend you’re chatting with on any messaging app to join your party voice chat, even if you haven’t added them to your friends list

Former id Software Execs: Space Marine 2 Is Selling Faster Than Any of Their Games, Including Doom and Quake

Space Marine 2 is off to a great start. Yesterday, Saber Interactive announced that its Warhammer 40K action game reached 2 million players , and it has retained consistently high concurrents on Steam. Now Saber Interactive CEO Tim Willits, who served as studio director at id Software until 2019, is claiming that Space Marine 2 is selling many of the games in id's famed franchises. He's backed up by former CEO Todd Hollenshead, who departed id Software in 2013 and currently works with Willits at Saber. Todd Hollenshead (former CEO of id Software) and I believe that Space Marine 2 is the fastest selling game we’ve ever worked on, including all the Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and RAGE games over the years. #SpaceMarine2 — Tim Willits (@TimWillits) September 11, 2024 "Todd Hollenshead (former CEO of id Software) and I believe that Space Marine 2 is the fastest selling game we’ve ever worked on, including all the Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and RAGE games over the years,&qu

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake: The Final Preview

I find the word “cozy” to be dreadfully overused when assigning genres to video games these days, but it’s hard to find another adjective that so perfectly captures what I love about Dragon Quest. Straightforward but rewarding turn-based combat paired with a classic hero’s journey told in a picturesque fantasy world result in a wonderfully traditional RPG experience I’ve always found so comforting. So when I was given the choice at a recent preview event to try out Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake on either PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, the choice to settle in on the couch in the Switch’s handheld mode was an easy one. And rest assured, Switch owners, Dragon Quest 3 looked and ran great on the aging Nintendo system. Square Enix’s other HD-2D games like Octopath Traveler and Live A Live were perfect for playing in short bursts before bed, and Dragon Quest 3 is looking to fit that mold as well. Unlike our first look at Dragon Quest 3’s remake which showed off how faithfully it’s st

Elden Ring Update 1.14 Makes Shadow of the Erdtree’s Final Boss Easier as Part of Significant Balance Changes

Elden Ring developer FromSoftware has released a patch that makes a number of significant balance changes to the base game as well as DLC expansion Shadow of the Erdtree . Update 1.14, out now for Elden Ring across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam, brings bug fixes and a long list of balance adjustments, including changes to the rock hard final fight in Shadow of the Erdtree that make it easier. Elsewhere, there are PvP-exclusive balance adjustments, general balance adjustments, and various fixes, including for unstable performance. Check out the patch notes below, courtesy of publisher Bandai Namco . Elden Ring is one of the biggest video games of recent years, selling an incredible 25 million copies since going on sale in 2022. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is a hit, too, selling five million in just three days despite tough requirements . IGN's Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree review returned a 10/10. We said: "Like the
