Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Returns In New Prequel Graphic Novel

The Legacy of Kain series maintains a rabid fan following, even though it's been a long time since there's been a new game. More than two decades, in fact. But there's a new ray of light on the Nosgoth horizon in the form of a graphic novel called Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise. As the first new Legacy of Kain content since 2003's Legacy of Kain: Defiance, The Dead Shall Rise serves as a prequel to the Soul Reaver games. The book flashes back to Raziel's human past as a Sarafan warrior and reveals how he came to be a vampire serving under Kain. The goal is to answer some long-running questions about the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver mythos while also introducing a major new vampire character with close ties to both Raziel and Kain. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise is a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Bit Bot Media. The book is written by Joshua Viola (True Believers, It Came From the Multiplex) and Angie Hodapp (Unio...

Beyond Beat 'Em Ups: SNK Has Ambitions to Become a Top 10 Publisher

Back in the day, SNK was one of gaming’s biggest names. King of Fighters and Fatal Fury were hugely popular beat-’em-ups in the 1980s and ’90s, while Metal Slug helped define the side-scrolling action game genre, and the company’s high-spec console, handheld and arcade hardware were the envy of many. After two tumultuous decades in the 2000s, SNK received investment from Saudi Arabia’s Electronic Gaming Development Company in 2020 and was fully acquired in 2022. The investment has come under scrutiny due to Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, which includes allegations of unfair treatment of women and the LGBTQ community. In the aftermath of the acquisition, an SNK lead insisted that the studio's new ownership "doesn't affect us in any way." Shortly after the opening of a new development studio in Singapore in April, IGN spoke with SNK President and CEO Kenji Matsubara about the company’s vision, which includes becoming a Top 10 global publisher. Matsubara’s go...

How Alice: Madness Returns Found New Life on the Internet Long After the Departure of Its Creator

If Alice: Madness Returns was dead on arrival , that would at least be aesthetically consistent. The 2011 sequel to American McGee's Alice went even deeper into Alice in Wonderland's red guts than the first game, pulling out the most nightmarish aspects of the Victorian children's story and tying their shadows into a neat action-adventure. But it suffered from abysmal launch sales , with reviewers and fans both being disappointed by what they felt were rough controls and level design. Still, game designer American McGee wasn't giving up. McGee, who created the series after being fired by id Software, hoped to gather enough community support for a follow-up , and the most diehard Alice believers gave it to him in spades. But after a decade of this cutting fan pressure, publisher EA finally made a decision in 2023 : there would be no more Alice games. They blamed the "analysis of the IP" and market conditions. Was it all over? Would Alice have to lie fa...

The First Descendant Review In Progress

At this point, I’ve now played The First Descendant in three or four different beta iterations, and each time I’ve felt no more or less certain whether this would be something my friends and I would want to play, or just another sci-fi shooter in a sea of similar games vying for our attention. After more than 45 hours sunk into a pre-launch preview build over the past week, I’m only slightly closer to answering that question – but I’m certainly not having a bad time. I’ve got a whole lot left to play, including the all-important endgame, for instance, so as of now I’m still not sure if The First Descendant will be my next looter-shooter fixation, or yet another one that misses the mark. Nexon’s free-to-play third-person multiplayer game plays in the same space as Genshin Impact , complete with cool-looking characters to unlock and countless currencies and materials to grind, all of which can be bypassed by those simply willing to cough up their hard-earned cash. And, like some of i...

Ticket to Ride: Paris Board Game Review

Image
Growing up in the suburbs of Illinois, I remember bringing my dad to and from the train station to get to work in the big city of Chicago. When Ticket to Ride came out later in life, it brought a lot of nostalgia for those big-city dreams in one of my other favorite memories with my family: playing board games . Family board game nights involving the franchise can bring you places worldwide, and also to different time periods. That's the case with the newest edition, Ticket to Ride: Paris, brings you to the bustling metropolis of Paris, France, in the Roaring Twenties. What’s in the Box The compact box of Ticket to Ride Paris holds a small treasure trove of gaming pieces. It includes a guidebook introducing a new game element, a small board, four bags of colored bus tokens (with an additional spare bag), matching circle colored meeples, destination tickets, and transportation cards adorned with art that evokes the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. The box's thoughtful desi...

The Developer of Tribes 3 Has Ditched the Game Just 3 Months After Launch

The developer of Tribes 3 has signaled plans to move on from the game after it failed to find an audience. Tribes 3 launched in March on Steam billed as the triumphant return of the fast-paced multiplayer first-person shooter series whose games were popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. But despite a ‘mostly positive’ Steam user review rating, player numbers were extremely low. According to SteamDB , Tribes 3 hit a peak of 890 concurrent players on Valve’s platform upon launch, with just 26 concurrent players at the time of this article’s publication. Developer Prophecy Games issued an update to say neither Tribes 3 or its prior game, the already shuttered Starsiege Deadzone, saw enough success to justify the team’s continued focus. As a result, it’s giving those who’ve spent money in those games credits towards its upcoming fast-paced 3v3 sports shooter Ultra Strikers. “These credits are meant to give back to players who supported us in early development,” Prophecy Games s...

Amazon’s Tomb Raider and Lord of the Rings Video Game Reveals ‘Not Too Far Away’

It’s been some time since Amazon announced its Tomb Raider and The Lord of the Rings video games, and it sounds like fans will have to wait a while longer for a reveal. Amazon announced it had signed a deal with Crystal Dynamics to develop and publish the next major Tomb Raider game back in December 2022. We’ve heard nothing in the year-and-a-half since, although Crystal Dynamics was forced to reassure fans that it was unaffected by devastating cuts at embattled parent company Embracer. Meanwhile, Amazon announced it had signed a deal with Middle-earth rights owner Embracer to develop an as-yet-untitled The Lord of the Rings MMO back in May 2023. Again, we’ve heard nothing since, but we do know this game is set in Middle-earth and features the stories of The Hobbit and more. Speaking to Variety , Amazon Games chief Christoph Hartmann said a reveal for either game is not imminent, but is not long away. “It’s not going to be tomorrow, but it’s not too far away,” Hartmann said,...

SteamWorld Heist 2 Unannounced for Game Pass, PR Says Logo Was a Mistake

SteamWorld Heist 2 is no longer confirmed for a Game Pass launch despite previous messaging from developer Thunderful. When the studio originally revealed its steampunk strategy follow-up in April of this year, it promised fans that they would see it launch on August 8, 2024, for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Game Pass. However, as spotted by XboxEra , social media posts mentioning a Game Pass release have since been deleted, and trailers that included the Xbox service’s branding have seemingly been modified and reuploaded without the logo. Its inclusion can still be seen in re-uploads from third-party accounts like YouTube channel GN Game Trailers . A representative with Fortyseven PR confirmed with XboxEra that SteamWorld Heist 2 is no longer coming to Game Pass, adding that the Xbox service's logo was mistakenly added. Thunderful and Fortyseven did not reveal how the Game Pass logo managed to worm its way into an officia...

Resident Evil Is Finally Back on PC via GOG, Resident Evil 2 and 3 to Follow

The original Resident Evil is now finally available on PC again thanks to a collaboration between Capcom and CD Projekt-owned storefront GOG. An announcement from the latter revealed the classic Resident Evil, not the remastered version, is now available on the store for $9.99. GOG also announced that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil will join it sometime in 2024, and a $24.99 bundle is available for those who want all three games. Resident Evil originally arrived on PC in 1996 but didn't exist on any digital storefronts until now. Steam, which has the remastered version but not the original, is expected to get the classic version soon, however, as a listing for it was spotted on European rating website PEGI . "In joint efforts with the original creators Capcom, we’re thrilled to announce the re-release of the original Resident Evil, the groundbreaking series that heralded the golden age of the survival horror genre," GOG said in the post. "This iconic class...
